Richard,

Your continued ability to receive very long range TP-DX in Oklahoma (especially
during this lackluster season) is pretty amazing. Your new 8" FSL antenna
apparently is compensating somewhat for the generally meager propagation.

<<<   594 JOAK? - a barely audible signal at 1243-1245 (LSR @ 1250).   >>>

It's probably tough in Oklahoma to track down an NHK1 parallel for positive
identification of JOAK. The parallels used on the west coast (891 and 1503) are
not likely to make the trip so far inland. On the other hand, no other TP on
594 is likely to make that inland trip, either, so if it sounds Japanese
there's little doubt what you received.

<<<    There were traces of signals on 567 and 693 kHz   >>>

567-JOIK (NHK1) is parallel to 594-JOAK, and 693-JOAB (NHK2) is parallel to
774-JOUB. But in your Oklahoma situation where the FSL antenna is probably
necessary to get even a wispy TP signal on any frequency, retuning the antenna
back and forth to check for a TP parallel is probably not a practical option.
If you can get a reasonably fair signal on either 594 or 774, you might be able
to use your 7" FSL to track that stable TP signal, while checking for a
parallel on the weaker station by using your more sensitive 8" FSL (inductively
coupled to another Ultralight radio). It's also possible to phase your 7" and
8" FSL antennas to provide cumulative gain... simply tune in a TP signal on the
more sensitive 8" FSL, then place the 7" FSL an equal distance away from the
Ultralight radio (with the radio in the middle), and tune the 7" FSL to the
same frequency. You should notice a fairly good gain boost.

<<<   Not a peep has been heard
from 972 HLCA this season.  In the past there was usually there a
strong heterodyne when I tune to 970 WDAY before sunrise   >>>

TP signals are generally down in strength this season, so its not surprising
that 972-HLCA has yet to show up in Oklahoma. Here in Puyallup the station
seems to have a special advantage, coming in at unusual strength. The other
TP-DXers here on the coast don't seem to receive it at the same strength, and
this location in general does seem to favor Korea and China, whereas the other
TP-DXers on the coast seem to have better reception of Japanese stations. This
pattern has been continuing for over 5 years now :-)

Subject: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/29/14.

This morning was possibly the best here for TP DX so far this
season.

594 JOAK? - a barely audible signal at 1243-1245 (LSR @ 1250).
747 JOIB - from 0936 until 1123, occasionally peaking to fair.
774 JOUB - from 0837, occasionally at fair strength.  Signal not
heard afterward.  I imagine the signal was audible from sunset in
Akita around 0742.

There were traces of signals on 567 and 693 kHz, but nothing
heard on 657, 666, 828, 972 or 1053.  Not a peep has been heard
from 972 HLCA this season.  In the past there was usually there a
strong heterodyne when I tune to 970 WDAY before sunrise.

Receivers: PL-606 (8" FSL) and PL-310 (7.5 ferrite rod).

Good DX.

near Perry OK USA.
