Hi Nick-
First of all, this DX season has hardly been "normal" for me. For the first
time, I have had to deal with a major electrical "buzz" that covers most of the
MW band. It seems to be coming from Comcast cable transformers on my street.
The electric company did come out to my house and were concerned and somewhat
helpful. Their technician and I walked the length of my street with my Sangean
PrD5 portable receiver. The bottom line, according to the technician, was
"This noise is not coming from us. It's coming from Comcast." Then the snow
came and I have yet to contact Comcast. Anyway, I did less MW DX this year
than any year in memory. So that makes your question more difficult to answer.
However, in past years the signal from BBC-909 has varied from poor to quite
good. At times the signal is clear enough that one can listen to the current
topic very easily. At other times, the audio seems a bit shallow and muffled
and one is best advised to use the Internet stream for comparison. 909 is also
parallel to 692 kHz which tends to be stronger but can suffer interference from
Montreal-690.
Overall, my answer to your question is that 909 tends to be at fair level. 692
is stronger as is Absolute Radio-1215. TalkSport-1089 can be strong but
requires a good null on Baltimore-1090.
I hope that helps.

Hi Marc,
What sort of strength does Five Live usually have at your
location? I've DXed from Cape Cod and area myself, and was
surprised
sometimes at how much the auroral zone (not a full blown
aurora) could
suppress TAs that looked "just over the horizon" from
a west coaster's
perspective.
Wonder if you and/or other more coastally located DXers could
comment
(possibly again?) on how TA's sound on a "normal" winter
evening?
best wishes,
Nick
