Well, from what my Japanese friends tell me, any kind of TP reception on a 
barefoot portable radio it is considered a pretty good DXing accomplishment, 
unless the listener is very close to an ocean beach (maybe similar to our own 
situation, here on the west coast?). My guess is that the DXer lives right next 
to the ocean (his YouTube user name is "Yokohama AA815"). As for why the Degen 
was an underperformer (even though its stock loopstick is probably the best 
among these portables), maybe the propagation took a dive when the Degen's turn 
came up? There are no guarantees in TP-DX propagation :-)
