Chuck,

Thanks for your comment.

As I recall, the solar activity was also elevated a year ago when you, me and
Tom all received 558-6WA and multiple Australians at Rockwork 4. Kiwi-slanted
propagation does seem to be a given at the site during the summer, with the
enhanced Oz propagation only showing up on unusual occasions. But when it does
show up (like yesterday) it can be pretty special. If you or Tom had been here
I probably could have had my // for 558-6WA again.

Gary (about to go "cliffhanging" again in 30 minutes)

Gary:

I wonder about the solar activity causing an off night for NZ.

According to the map on this page: http://www.aurora-service.net/

a K index of 9 wouldn't wipe out the North Island where most of our receptions
originate. Plus, a K index of 4 (the peak for the last 24 hours) wouldn't touch
the South Island.
Perhaps aurora effects extend a bit further than visible effects. I don't know.
But I have had tremendous NZ DX with high auroral activity, peaking with a
night with an A index of 90 and never-better NZ DX.

Typical Kiwi-slanted propagation took a day off at the plunging ocean cliff
this morning as elevated solar activity made Australian DX the order of the
day. Oz big guns on 576, 594, 702, 774 and 792 pushed the NZ regulars off of
their frequencies, while 558, 585 (two Oz stations), 639 and 675 featured
unusual (for the cliff) Australian DX of varying strength.
