900 - 1600 Khz This morning did not belong to the upper band (and neither did yesterday...) but with a little patience and digging, some nuggets were retrieved.
909, 918, 927, 936, 945khz... carriers and little else during the 12:20 until 13:40 session. 954 khz Almost always TBS Tokyo JOKR and today no exception - higher energy music and talk - and you can tell by the fact that the female on-air personalities sound 16 years old and giggle a lot. 963 Khz - if you hope to hear Russian on medium wave these days, this will be one of the first - and ironically, it is from China. Come to think of it, Russia on medium-wave is a sad shadow of its former self. As little as 5 - 7 years ago there were a dozen high powered Russian long wave stations in Siberia that would put bone crushing signals into the North West - truly staggering levels of signals. 279 Khz being one good example. The electric bills got too high. They turned them off. Anyway - at great levels at 13:27 moments before the band started its sunrise death pangs. 972 Khz KBS S. Korea - at 1500KW (max) this is easily the first S. Korean station you will here. IN for the entire morning session with chorale/christian sounding music and talk. 1017 Khz JOLB Fukuoka, Japan - what I consider one of the more dominant and easily received Tier-2 NHK2 stations. At a decent level around 1323 UTC 1053 Khz S. Korea Jammer - built for one purpose - to play something that "sounds" like "Ditty ditty ditty ditty..." over and over again with no variation - and much to my surprise, it sometimes fades revealing either Japan underneath or the DPRK station its trying to flatten. In this morning for the entire shift - but with JJ coming to the surface every 5 - 10 minutes or so. 1143 Khz China (t) with Chinese opera - as opposed to more the poppy stuff that Taiwan Fisheries plays - this is a classic battle royale channel. Either one can appear. 1179 Khz UNid - 12:53 with what sounded like Chinese opera. 1242 Khz NBS JOLF - one of the top ten Japanese stations to usually appear and top 5 among the "commercial" stations. 12:51 UTC 1287 Khz JOHR Hokkaido HBC - arguably the best sounding Tier 1 commercial stations in Japan - often at absurdly good levels on the W/NW Flag definitely in the category of "always there when the band is open..." and often among the last to leave when sunrise sets in. 1566 Khz HLAZ (FEBC) - likely the consistently loudest Asian signal on the band- with a couple of different antenna patterns - and at 250kw packs a wallop and a great "split" for good penetration into the North American continent. When in Hawaii, this appears early and stays late - here on the west coast, it'll hang around regardless of the suns position in the sky. 1575 Khz VOA Thailand - at a million watts, not quite the thumper that you would expect. Almost always second fiddle to 1566 and always with Lao and S.E.A. languages and familiar VOA interval signals on the hour. 1593 Khz CNR (t) China likely the chorale music at 13:32 as the band began its shut down. This is a good window for Japan quite often later in the season.
