As Richard, Nick, Colin, Steve and Craig have reported it was an excellent
morning for Asian signals (at least for this lean solar year). Besides the
usual big gun TP's (including an S9 signal from 972-HLCA) there was a superb
variety of less common Asians, with the mid-band Chinese stations the star
performers here.

At first my first band check at 1245 it was obvious that propagation was
special, and the FSL-boosted listening station was quickly set up in the back
yard. The regular Japanese and Korean big guns on 594, 693, 747, 774, 828, 972,
1053 and 1566 were especially potent, but the real attraction was a diverse
collection of Asian signals on 531, 558, 603, 657, 738, 1017, 1035, 1044 and
1323 kHz. The Chinese mid-band stations were unusually strong, especially
1035-CNR1 and 1044-CRI. After making a few recordings of 972-HLCA's huge signal
I concentrated on these mid-band Chinese, when 1044-CRI's Japanese service came
up to its best level ever here in Puyallup (good) at 1318. 1035-CNR1's echoes
were also unusually strong, but unfortunately hit hard by domestic splatter.
1017-CRI's Korean service was also around at a fair level in and out, but
lacked the energy of the other two stations. As if to fit into the trend, the
1053-Jammer had a co-channel with apparent Chinese inflection (a
station heard before on the ocean coast, at Cape Perpetua). Late on around
1325 the somewhat unusual 603-China made a fair appearance to dominate 603-HLSA
with its Chinese music, while a presumed 738-BEL2 came out of the KCBS splatter
as increasing daylight snuffed out the California station. 1134-JOQR was also
around at a fair level for most of the session, while 1323-CRI managed a few
fair peaks with apparent Russian service both before and after sunrise. Overall
the Asian propagation was easily the best of the new season, with 972-HLCA
becoming the first TP signal to reach an S9 level with its Korean music at
1312.

972 HLCA Dangjin, S. Korea Male-female conversation at a huge level at 1311;
reached S9 with music shortly thereafter
