Interesting comments on the PRD15! It is indeed an attractive, well-built radio, with surprisingly good audio, and excellent FM performance...not nearly as sensitive for FM HD decode as the Sparc, but it does well on a local FM HD (WVAQ HD1,2,3 Morgantown WV). But as a "light" AM DX machine...poor in my experience. My Sony 7600 runs rings around the Sangean. And my CCrane SSB Skywave runs rings around both the Sangean and Sony. For example: In a direct comparison, I did a mid-day listen on 820 for the now-digital WWFD-Frederick MD and WVSG-Columbus. The two stations are 300 miles apart, and I'm directly in the middle, so I can't use the loopsticks to null either one--I either have them both, or nothing. The CCrane and Sony both produce a slow beat between the two stations, with the Columbus station producing weak but intelligible audio, accompanied by a recently increased hiss level from Frederick (used to be just the beat, pre-digital). But the Sangean produces a barely detectable rise in ambient noise, and no detectable audio from Columbus, or even a beat between the two stations. The PRD15 just lacks sensitivity, maybe due to its shorter loopstick (why? They had room to use a longer loopstick...oh well). In sum, I find the Sangean a really nice FM radio, and it's great-sounding for local AMs and nighttime ballgames on AM...but as a "light" AM DX machine, disappointing. You can't beat the little Skywave for portable AM DX fun. _______________________________________________ IRCA mailing list [email protected] http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca
