Your story reminds me of the mid-1990s when I'd tune into RRI Palangkaraya on 60 meters--regularly--during my morning drive to work.
The car receiver was a Philips DC-777; I think Walt Salmaniw owned one of these fine units also. Its achilles heel was segments of the LCD digits going out, due to poor connections with the printed circuit board (kind of like the early CCradio displays).
