1. thinking/speaking style and mood www.peoplewho.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 4 May 2018 10:30:06 -0700 From: Sylvia Caras <[email protected]> Subject: thinking/speaking style and mood Many argue that the world is a harsh place, and that it is the stresses and misfortunes in life that make people depressed, not their thinking style. Wrong! Countless people suffer misfortunes and do not get depressed or anxious, while others seemingly suffer no misfortune at all, and are blighted with depression and anxiety. The Stoic philosopher (and former slave) Epictetus opined that 'men are disturbed not by things, but by the view which they take of them'. A sentiment that is totally, completely and absolutely correct. https://aeon.co/ideas/the-danger-of-absolute-thinking-is-absolutely-clear?utm_source=Aeon+Newsletter&utm_campaign=2fe3c2fef4-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_05_03&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_411a82e59d-2fe3c2fef4-70344581 Powered by LSoft's LISTSERV(R) list management software ------------------------------ End of IRIS Digest - 2 May 2018 to 5 May 2018 (#2018-36) ********************************************************
