----------------------------------------------------------- New Message on Irish Fencing Forum
----------------------------------------------------------- From: Eoin Message 2 in Discussion Yeh the idea of a third novice competition was discussed in UCD last year but we never came to any agreement on it. If we were to have another novice tournament I think it should be held before Christmas, afterwards the calendar gets too hectic. Also students who don't go to Schull might be more interested in going to a novice tournament that doesn't involve going away for a weekend. Regarding younger fencers, there is not much you can do to prevent young novice fencers getting beaten by older fencers. Another novice tournament in Dublin would benefit them but it would be probably better to have under-18's tournaments. There are currently school tournaments being run I believe. I believe that originally the Junior Nationals was only open to juniors but a lack of juniors forced a change (am I right?) It should be possible to have an under-18's section to every tournament after a while, this is done in most other sports. In fact I am sure it could be done in the Irish Open, there are enough young fencers around from what I have been hearing. In Carrickfergus they run a younger event alongside the main tournament.
