when i started it was pre-eletrics - PIL was very common as after 3 
simultaneous hits priority was given, and the most ommon way to defend against 
this was PIL   you could step back, dis-engage and I think step forward with 
PIL   however, if you lunged into the incoming attack you lost right of way as 
it turned into an attack and as the other guy had priority you lost the hit   
(time for a ryan-esque strory) it was 1990 - i was in the L12 of the public 
schools tournament against a scottish fencer who had the whole of glasgow 
supporting him...I was 4-3 up (first to 10) and he got priority...PIL ame out, 
he attacked, I disengaged, hit to me   later, when i was 9-8 up he got priority 
again - PIL...he went to beat, i disengaged, he anticipated and reversed the 
beat...ha! but I anticipated that he would anticipate and did a second 
disengagement - the crowd called for his hit, i shouted and all 4 judges 
lifeted their arms - would the presidant call it correctly?    Yes he did! and 
through to the L8 I went
