safety is your responsibility, as you say, but there is also a wider duty of 
care     you may not set-out to harm someone, but going onto the piste with old 
or faulty gear, such as an old blade, can cause injury     you may not set out 
to cause harm, and nor does your opponent, but two inexperienced fencers, 
getting caught up in the moment, can cause hurt - the President has a duty of 
care to calm them down - Keith getting whacked by a bunch of Italians is an 
example of the president letting him down   fencers may think that fencing Epee 
in a tracksuit is fine, as they are not knowledgeable enough in the sport to 
understand the risks - it is the organisers duty of care to protect fencers 
from themselves and enforce what they consider to be a minimun saftey standared 
- the example of FIE guidelines being an example 
people ae responsible for their own safety, but sometimes some hand-holding and 
forsight by others is needed
