----------------------------------------------------------- New Message on Irish Fencing Forum
----------------------------------------------------------- From: DexterSin Message 31 in Discussion I thought that the publicity was great, but that the article itself was not particularly helpful. Too much emphasis was put on the stereotype of fencers as rich south-side Dubliners, rather than pointing out the fact that most human beings, so long as they have fully functional arms and brains, can fence, and that fencing - up to a fairly high level - does not require the reflexes of a mongoose, the flexibility of an Olympic gymnast, or the ability to do a one-finger press-up. In fact, almost everyone can do it, providing that their club is willing to them the basic equipment to start with. As for needing to be rich...You need to spend a fair amount of money in one go, if you want the full panoply, especially for foil or sabre, but I daresay that most people spend more on acquiring football strips and expensive runners. Don't get me wrong - fencing needs all the publicity it can get, and the article is a terrific start - but we need to change the stereotype, rather than perpetuate it, if fencing is to become a reasonably widely-practiced and supported activity. ----------------------------------------------------------- To stop getting this e-mail, or change how often it arrives, go to your E-mail Settings. http://groups.msn.com/IrishFencingForum/_emailsettings.msnw Need help?
