I would suggest you to go for MySql only. It would help you with 
platform changing advantage if required in future, without suffering 
from Database problems later on.

You can host your Rails website with Apache and MySql.
You can host your Rails website with Windows and MySql with Fast CGI 
advantage

You CANNOT easily host your Rails website with Apache and SQL SERVER.

Under this scenario IronRuby on Rails with MySQL is a safe and best way 
to go.
