Immigration officials must investigate how professed former terrorist
Zachariah Anani got into the country and obtained Canadian citizenship,
says Windsor West MP Brian Masse.
"Mr. Anani claims he was a terrorist. That's his background. He also became
a Canadian citizen, so we'll be investigating to find out whether or not
that information was provided at the time," Masse said following a news
conference Saturday by members of Windsor's Muslim community in response to
Anani's anti-Islamic lecture series at Campbell Baptist Church.
Anani angered local Muslims when he used passages from the Qur'an during
his first lecture Jan. 11 to support his view that Islam preaches violence.
Masse said he is going to ask for a ministerial review of Anani's
citizenship and 1996 claim for refugee status...
As well, members of the Windsor Islamic Association have filed a formal
complaint with the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
CAIR has sent letters to Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant asking for
a prompt investigation into Anani's lectures under Canada's hate crime
legislation.
It also sent a letter to the Windsor police Street Crimes Branch requesting
officers attend Anani's remaining lectures to monitor them for breaches of
the legislation. Two plainclothes officers were at the first lecture...
