War Is Terrorism

Almost every individual or group not in love with US foreign policy, which Washington wants to stigmatize, is charged with being associated with, or being a member of, al Qaeda, as if there's a precise and meaningful distinction between people retaliating against American imperialism.

"They told us this was one of the world's worst terrorists, and he got the sentence of a drunken driver," said Ben Wizner, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, referring to David Hicks, a 31-year-old Australian who in a plea bargain with a US military court will serve nine months in prison, largely in Australia. That's after five years at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba without being charged with a crime, without a trial, without a conviction. Under the deal, Hicks agreed not to talk to reporters for one year (a slap in the face of free speech), to forever waive any profit from telling his story (a slap -- mon Dieu! -- in the face of free enterprise), to submit to US interrogation and testify at future US trials or international tribunals (an open invitation to the US government to hound the young man for the rest of his life), to renounce any claims of mistreatment or unlawful detention (a requirement which would be unconstitutional in a civilian US court).

Uranium and the War : The effects of depleted uranium weapons in Iraq

In five billion years our sun will explode into a white dwarf and envelope the earth, according to NASA projections.

The half-life of uranium 238 is 4.5 billion years.

This means that by the time the Earth ceases to be a planet, only a little more than half of the depleted uranium (DU) that the United States Army is firing into Iraq and other countries around the world will be gone. The rest of the radioactive material will still be poisoning the Iraqi people.

The U.S. Army revealed in March 2003 that it dropped between 320 and 390 tons of DU during the Gulf War—the first time the material was ever used in combat—and it is estimated that more still has been dropped during the current invasion, though there have been no official counts as yet.

Pentagon report says no link between Saddam and Al-Qaeda

Interrogations of Saddam Hussein and seized documents confirmed the former Iraqi regime had no links with Al-Qaeda, a Pentagon report said Friday, contradicting the US case for the 2003 invasion.

It contradicts a strong argument for the invasion made by the administration of President George W. Bush that Baghdad had a working relationship with Al-Qaeda.

In a radio interview Wednesday Cheney insisted on a prewar link between Iraq and Al-Qaeda, saying the group was working in Iraq "before we even arrived on the scene."

"As I say, they were present before we invaded Iraq," Cheney told conservative radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh.

Report outlines Pentagon effort to link Iraq, al Qaeda

Declassified memo shows how officials shaped intelligence. Just four months after the Sept. 11 attacks, then-Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz dashed off a memo to a senior Pentagon colleague, demanding action to identify connections between Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's regime and al Qaeda.

In making its case for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the Bush administration relied heavily on evidence that Hussein was stockpiling weapons of mass destruction. However, an important secondary reason was the allegation of connections between Iraq and al Qaeda. While the CIA has been criticized for erroneously gauging Iraq's weapons programs, its assessment of Iraq's ties to al Qaeda turned out to be more accurate.

Pentagon Officer Created Phony Intel on Iraq/al-Qaeda Link

Newly released documents confirm that a Pentagon unit knowingly cooked up intelligence claiming a direct link between Iraq and al-Qaeda in order to win support for a preemptive strike against the country.

A report prepared by the Defense Department's Inspector General for Carl Levin, the Democratic Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, explicitly shows how former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith used his defense department position to cook intelligence claiming a connection between the terrorist organization and Saddam Hussein's regime.

Cheney Reasserts al-Qaida-Saddam Link

Vice President Dick Cheney repeated his assertions lies of al-Qaida links to Saddam Hussein's Iraq on Thursday as the Defense Department released a report citing more evidence that the prewar government did not cooperate with the terrorist group.

However, a declassified Pentagon report released Thursday said that interrogations of the deposed Iraqi leader and two of his former aides as well as seized Iraqi documents confirmed that the terrorist organization and the Saddam government were not working together before the invasion.

The Sept. 11 Commission's 2004 report also found no evidence of a collaborative relationship between Saddam and Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network during that period.

Let's Hear it for the War on Terror: Somalia

Citing one of the globe's great champions of human rights, " As President Bush has said, what every terrorist fears most is human freedom - societies where men and women make their own choices, answer to their own conscience and live by their hopes instead of their resentments."

Last year a coalition of Islamic groups managed to bring calm to the capital of Mogadishu by getting the feuding clans to disarm their militias, and convincing Somalis, the majority of whom are Sunnis, to accept Islam as the solution to their turmoil.

That calm lasted for six months. The problem was that, as the U.S. saw it, while militant Islam might pacify the Somalis, it could also offer sanctuary for groups linked with Al Qaeda to regroup and train for future attacks. Similarly as well, the Ethiopian military scooped up scores of people –people of all ages, some apparently just passing through–and packed them off to clandestine prisons. Added to those were several hundred more who had fled to neighboring Kenya. International reaction was not long in coming.

The Press is Paying Patsy With Terrorist Propaganda

Pace 9/11, I am not afraid of terrorism, even though I lived in London during the worst years of IRA activity and already this year I missed a terrorist attack on my hotel in Islamabad by only a couple of days. Terrorism and the damage it can do -- in particular the political and societal damage -- is greatly overrated. Who to blame? Doubtless, the politicians have a vested interest in whipping up the populace’s reaction, but most of all we should blame the media. They behave like patsies to the terrorists. They give their dirty deeds every bit of publicity they could ever dare to hope for and, as I saw last month in Nigeria’s oil producing delta, ignore the often valuable activities of the plethora of non-violent activists.

Look at the political plight of the Spanish prime minister, Jose Luis Rodriquez Zapatero. Since the first day he took office he has constantly been pilloried by the principal opposition party for being soft on the Basque terrorist group, ETA. The Popular Party has kept up the false refrain that the Madrid station bombings of three years ago that took 190 lives were the work of ETA. For long enough Zapatero tried to ignore them, and continued his quiet and seemingly progressing negotiations with ETA. But then late last year what is probably a dissident ETA grouping killed two people at Madrid airport and most of the media, softened up by three years of the opposition’s carping, turned on Zapatero. His negotiating hands are now effectively tied.

Who today would dare stand up and say talk to Al Qaeda, negotiate with the Taleban or treat the leaders of Hamas as sincere fellows whose agenda is worth discussing? There are few of our politicians, and even fewer members of the media.

What a feat for an "informed and peace loving" people!

Without a full and comprehensive war reparations to Iraqis, what welcome would the Americans expect from the people of a future sovereign Iraq?

Bush/Cheney Still Lie with Abandon

What makes George W. Bush and Dick Cheney such extraordinary threats to the future of American democracy is their readiness to tell half-truths and outright lies consistently without any apparent fear of accountability.

Bush and Cheney apparently believe that today’s friendlier media environment still lets them do or say almost anything they want. But a democratic Republic cannot long endure when leaders substitute lies for truth.

There are politicians who are immune to this basest form of politics, profiles in courage like Paul Wellstone or Russ Feingold. But for every one of them, there are tons more like Hillary Clinton or John Kerry or John Edwards, who are so interested in advancing their careers that they are willing to cast even this most despicable, this most murderous, this most shameful of votes to get there.

An Administration's Epic Collapse

When Bush came to office--installed by the Supreme Court after receiving fewer votes than Al Gore--I speculated that the new President would have to govern in a bipartisan manner to be successful. He chose the opposite path, and his hyper-partisanship has proved to be a travesty of governance and a comprehensive failure.

I've tried to be respectful of the man and the office, but the three defining sins of the Bush Administration--arrogance, incompetence, cynicism--are congenital: they're part of his personality.

IRAQIS : UP FROM THE ASHES

In 1991, the U.S. military virtually wiped Iraq off the map. At the end of 42 days and nights of bombing, little of the country’s infrastructure was left undamaged. But, the U.S. administration did not anticipate the miraculous rebound Iraq would make in the first couple of years following the country’s annihilation..

Bush thought the destruction of tens of thousands of buildings (including 4,000 schools and 20,000 houses), as well as rendering useless the sewage, electricity, and water facilities in Iraq would bring the Iraqis to their knees. When that did not work, he put a noose around the country to stop anything from entering. Still, the Iraqis stood proud. As a last resort, Bush ordered the destruction of their crops, but the Iraqis did not succumb.

The defiance of the Iraqi people became evident and Bush experienced another setback in his imperialistic plans — the Iraqi people were rebuilding their country at a fast pace with no outside help.

The survey by the Washington-based Pew Research Center for the People and the Press found that 52 percent have little or no faith in the military's portrayal of the four-year war, compared with 60 percent who feel the same way about the press reports of the conflict.

"In 2007, the Israeli army continues to deploy the same violent policy towards Palestinian children with eight children being killed so far this year," a press release from the group said on Thursday.
