Dare To look Back : War Criminal
On the evening of 9-11, Bush went before a
paralyzed nation and, after a brief comment about
praying, grieving and mourning for the 3,000
victims of that terrible day, he announced,
"Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil."
Then, warming to his subject, Bush rammed home
what would become his mantra for the next six
years -- "These acts shattered steel, but they
cannot dent the steel of American resolve." He
then assured the masses that he would make no
distinction between the "terrorists" and the
regimes that harbored them. Bush's vision for
revenge was to chase them all over the world and kill them all...
But a vision is not a plan. Looking back, it
appears that Bush's plan for perpetual war is
sending Americans to their deaths, unequipped and
untrained, while bellowing, "Support the Troops!"
Bush's plan is destroying an entire nation, its
culture, its infrastructure -- raping, torturing
and slaughtering its people for no reason other
than he can. It is creating a humanitarian crisis
of mind-boggling proportions -- more than 3.9
million Iraqis have fled their homes to safer
areas in Iraq and in neighboring countries.

Poll of London Muslims challenges stereotypes-
General London population supports violence more than Muslims do
LONDON -- Muslims in London not only have almost
twice as much confidence in the government as the
wider public, but greater faith in the police,
judicial, and electoral system, a poll suggested Tuesday.
* 81 percent of London Muslims said violence
was completely unjustified, even if used in a
"noble cause" compared to 72 percent of the general public.
* 74 percent said they were loyal to the UK
compared to 45 percent of non-Muslims.
* 82 percent respected other religions, as
opposed to 54 percent of the wider public.
* 78 percent versus 69 percent had confidence
in the police; for the government, judicial
system, and elections the figures were 64 percent
* versus 36 percent, 67 percent versus 55
percent, and 73 percent versus 60 percent.

The Americans Still Don't Get It
The surge isn't going to work because it was
wrong to begin with. The first rule for an
occupier fighting an insurgency is that you can't
win by killing insurgents. Killing insurgents is
easy and makes it feel like you are doing something, but its a trap.

The Inexplicable Enrichment of Bush Cronies : The Iraq Money Trail
It's time for Americans to face the cold hard
truth that nothing will be accomplished by
allowing the daily carnage in Iraq to continue,
and if Bush has his way, our young people will be
dying in this war profiteering scheme until hell
freezes over. Congress needs to authorize funding
to pull our troops out of that deathtrap and not one dime more.

The Devil's Dictionary of War in Iraq
Like all wars, the "war in Iraq" or "Iraq war" --
it's never gained the double caps of the Korean
or Vietnam Wars -- has also been a war of words.
From "homeland" and "unlawful combatant" to
"extraordinary rendition" and "Global War on
Terror" (aka:
War IV or the Long War), never has an
administration reached more often for its
dictionaries to create pretzled words and
phrases. Its war in Iraq has been no exception.
But recently there's been a change, hardly
noticed by anyone. The administration's familiar
war vocabulary and imagery, which hung in there
so remarkably long, has finally disappeared down
the memory hole. So many images, tailored for
home-front consumption, each meant to help give
just a little more time to an increasingly
embattled administration, have in recent months disappeared.

Endgame: Iraqi Insurgents Press For Final Blow
By all indicators, America's Iraqi expedition has
failed miserably. One by one, American allies
draw down their forces or resist increasing
public pressure to do so. The central Iraqi
government exercises little control--its main
means of exercising power is negative--the use of
Shiite death squads. A bloody civil war has
created a feedback loop of ethnic violence that
cannot be stopped. In the north, the Kurds lie in
wait for the perfect opportunity to break away.
And Iran is quietly grooming the Iraqi government to act as a client state.
To this end, insurgents have attempted numerous
attacks inside the Green Zone, the most brazen of
which was an April 12 attack on the Iraqi
parliament that killed one and injured
twenty-two. It is unclear how heavily Al-Qaeda In
Iraq and other insurgent factions have
infiltrated the Green Zone, but past plots
disrupted by American and Iraqi investigators
have indicated that Sunni insurgents definitely
have established a presence. Even if insurgents
fail to breach the Green Zone's defenses for a
much more devastating attack, they still can
succeed in waging a war of literal and
psychological attrition. Insurgents have
increasingly targeted Americans within the Green
Zone with mortars, weapons that can be fired from
many miles away using commercially available GPS coordinates.

Sunni warns of Shiia on Shiia clashes as a result
of the recent "provisional government" scheme
Iraqi League, a predominantly Sunni organization,
reports on its website about the recent
announcement of a "provisional leadership for the
South" by a group meeting in Baghdad. (The
initial and very sketchy news about this in
Al-Hayat is summarized here). Iraqi League's main
points, quoting the views of a Sunni member of
the national Parliament, are: (1) The move was
illegal and unconstitutional, because not in
conformity with the law on the creation of
federal regions; and (2) the fact that this is
being attempted increases the chances of
Shiite-versus-Shiite clashes. And in particular
it cites an anonymous source to the effect the
meeting and the announcement of this provisional
government are sponsored by SCIRI and in
particular by its leader Abdulaziz al-Hakim as
part of a partition-Iraq strategy.

U.S. troop deaths climbing in Iraq
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Over the past six months,
American troops have died in Iraq at the highest
rate since the war began, an indication that the
conflict is becoming increasingly dangerous for
U.S. forces even after more than four years of fighting.
From October 2006 through last month, 532
American soldiers were killed, the most during
any six-month period of the war. March also
marked the first time that the U.S. military
suffered four straight months of 80 or more
fatalities. April, with at least 58 service
members killed through Monday, is on pace to be
one of the deadliest months of the conflict for American forces.

"Deletion" of Images in Afghanistan: Attempt to Cover Up Civilian Killings?
New York - In the past day, there has been wide
media coverage of an official report on the
slaying of Afghan civilians by U.S. forces early
last month. The Afghan human rights commission
concluded that American marines overreacted to a
bomb ambush with excessive force, peppering
civilians and vehicles with machine-gun fire in
attacks that covered 10 miles of road and left 12
civilians dead, including an infant.
The forced deleting of images by the US military
as well as the refusal to let journalists
continue in their work constitutes a violation of
the right to freedom of expression as it
obstructed the ability of the media present to
seek, receive and impart information about the 4
March incident, without falling under the
exceptions stipulated by ICCPR art.19(3).
