S'porean students 'not hate crime victims'
SYDNEY -- Australian police on Wednesday denied that two
Singaporean engineering students bludgeoned to death in a
Sydney apartment were the victims of a race-related crime.
The men, identified by police as Mr Tay Chow Lyang and
Mr Tan Poh Chuan, both age 26, were found dead on Monday
in their apartment after a neighbour called emergency services.
Police spokesman Dave Owens said the families of both victims
had been notified and another person who lived in the apartment
was helping police with inquiries.
Autopsies showed the pair died from blows to the head from a
blunt object. Police were running forensic tests on a baseball bat
and a knife found in the apartment.
Mr Owens said there was nothing to support media reports that the
deaths were the result of a murder-suicide, a kidnapping or an
extortion attempt.
'There's also nothing to indicate that this was a racially motivated
attack,' he added.
He urged the victims' classmates from the University of New South
Wales to contact police if they had any information that might help
them with investigations.
Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has been helping
relatives of the two men make travel arrangements to Sydney.
'The Singapore High Commission in Canberra has also sent a senior
officer to Sydney to provide further consular assistance to the
bereaved families,' the ministry said. -- AP
