MCA recognised and supported the fact that Malaysia is an Islamic country and not an Islamic state.
Party deputy president Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said this yesterday that an Islamic country meant that majority of the citizens were Muslims while Islamic state meant all the administration in the country was based on the Quran.
Chan said Islamic countries include Indonesia and Turkey.
He said members of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference like Malaysia must meet the requirement whereby a majority of the citizens must be Muslims.
He said Islamic states would include countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.
“We are not an Islamic state,” he said in response to debate by delegates that non-Muslims were facing problems following interpretation of the laws on religion in the country.
Chan said there were people who were confused with the two terms – Islamic country and Islamic state.
Chan said MCA would go all out to protect the Federal Constitution and would never let loose on it.
“Because of this, the Kelantan Government could not implement its hudud laws,” he said.
