Akhir sekali Polis Diraja Malaysia meminta orang ramai yang tak ada CCTV membantu polis menangkap penjenayah atau terroris yang paling digeruni oleh warga KL ketika ini. Tuesday, May 10th, 2011 Police are recruiting building owners and cab drivers, and even using CCTVs to track down the elusive acid splashers... you can help too KUALA LUMPUR: BUKIT Aman CID director Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin has issued a call for the public to be on the alert for the acid splashers who have been terrorising the city for over a month. Civilians have also been urged to note details of the suspects in the event they encounter the culprits. The smallest details, such as the type of helmet, motorcycle or even the type of clothing the culprits wear, could prove to be invaluable leads. Business owners with CCTVs installed on their premises have been asked to monitor the footage in the off-chance they might have captured images of the criminals who have struck no less than eight times so far. Hunt stepped up POLICE have added closed-circuit television (CCTV) as well as Kuala Lumpur's taxi drivers to their arsenal in a renewed bid to bring down the notorious acid splashers' month-long reign of terror. They have also reiterated their call for the public to provide information which could lead to the arrest of the culprits. To maximise surveillance efforts to track down the criminals, police will be depending on footage from CCTVs spread across the city. Federal CID director Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said this was to ensure no area will be free from monitoring should the splashers strike again. “We will view police CCTVs placed throughout the city and elsewhere in the Klang Valley again and monitor them thoroughly.” There are 1,000 static CCTVs installed in the city, managed by City Hall. The cameras, used for traffic surveillance as well as crime prevention, can also be utilised by police to help in criminal investigations. Apart from the electronic “eyes in the sky”, police are enlisting the help of the city's taxi drivers to serve as spotters. Mohd Bakri said they had already initiated discussions with several taxi companies to see how the cabbies could be deployed. “We have begun talks with several taxi companies. We have advised them to be on the lookout for suspects of dark complexion and riding either Honda EX-5 or Yamaha motorcycles.” The acid splashers, who have been known to work in pairs, have so far maintained the same method of operation by riding a motorcycle and surprising the victims from behind by splashing corrosive liquid into their faces. They have claimed 20 victims, overwhelmingly female, in eight incidents. However, despite appeals from the police, information on the acid splashers has been scant, at best. Mohd Bakri said all efforts would come to nought if the public did not play its part in nabbing the men. The smallest details, he said, could prove invaluable. “Shops and building owners throughout Klang Valley, do your bit. Go through your surveillance videos ... who knows, you may get something,” he said. “The public, especially women, are to look out for motorcyclists behaving suspiciously. Try to look out for the type of helmet, motorcycle or even the type of clothing they are wearing.” After being “missing in action” for a month, the acid splashers re-emerged last Friday, this time in the city centre, which is a deviation from their usual haunts of outlying areas. In that incident, two women were attacked as they walking back to their car after having dinner in Jalan Pudu Lama. A lone man on a motorcycle approached them from behind and splashed a bottle of liquid on them in the 9pm incident. Within 30 minutes of the incident, he struck again, this time at a parking lot in front of The Mall shopping centre in Jalan Putra. The victim was a female lawyer in her 30s who sustained minor burns and was given outpatient treatment at a nearby hospital. The attacks continued the next day. This time, a mother and her year-old child fell victims in the compound of their home in Persiaran Titiwangsa. The woman, in her 30s, and her baby were inside their compound about 3pm when the man rode by and threw the liquid over the gate before speeding off. Both mother and child were taken to KL Hospital for treatment as the liquid had entered their eyes. Where the 'splasher' struck 1. March 2 - Eight Year 4 and Year 6 pupils and a teacher of SK Bukit Bandaraya in Jalan Bangkung, Bangsar were splashed with a liquid by a motorcyclist clad in black. 2. March 24 - Two marketing executives were splashed with acid as they were walking along Jalan Tun Sambanthan at 5.30pm. 3. March 25 - A 25-year-old history teacher, on the way to school, was attacked near the back gate of a school in Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad at 7am. 4. March 26 - A Frenchman and his female companion became the 13th and 14th victims of a corrosive liquid-splashing attack by a motorcycle duo in Jalan Conlay about 3pm. 5. April 2 - In Jalan Mantin, Negri Sembilan, a 27-year-old woman and her 18-year-old niece were attacked by two men on a motorcycle 9pm. 6. May 6 - Two women were splashed with acid when a motorcyclist attacked them from behind in Jalan Pudu Lama at 9pm. 7. May 6 - Thirty minutes later, a lawyer in her 30s, was attacked near a parking lot in front of The Mall shopping centre in Jalan Putra. 8. May 7 - A woman and her one-year-old baby were standing in her house compound in Persiaran Titiwangsa when the splasher rode by and threw the liquid at them at 3pm.
