Old Glory isn't what she used to be

By MICHAEL HARRIS -- For the Ottawa Sun

I don't mind my in-box being filled with hate e-mail over my opinions of George W. Bush's America.

That's what happens when you have a talk show. But what is shocking to me is how the world's greatest republic is falling apart with the support of so many people in my own country. As in the trials of O.J. Simpson and Robert Blake, the facts don't seem to matter. They matter to me.

One of the great paradoxes of our time is the America of William Bendix, just a little over 60 years ago, and the America of George Bush, living under that same beautiful flag but in different countries.

Bendix America was the beacon of democracy. It was reflected in a series of Grade-B movies starring the avuncular actor, usually as the brave and simple G.I. dying in the arms of his sergeant with an other-worldly light in his eyes. Like Ronald Reagan, William Bendix expired in those films reflecting the selfless ideals of American democracy while paying the ultimate price to defeat German and Japanese aggression and fascism.

The new America is a land of powerful frauds who still know the language of democracy and the pull of patriotism but have long since stopped living their realities. Patriotism has become a tool rather than a creed. In a perverse inversion of the patriotism of JFK; these people don't sacrifice for their country, but rather sacrifice their country for their own gain. The list of national betrayal by America's elites grows longer by the day and who can deny it?

Political America makes war based on demonstrably clear falsehoods, tortures with the best of them, bullies the rest of the world and offers no apologies.

Corporate America talks social justice and practises the ethics of utter rapacity, from Ken Lay to Bernie Evers. Martha Stewart, America's jailbird, exudes family values but behaves like any other tawdry corporate insider when money is at stake.

Religious America purports to champion life, then ignores that absolute value everywhere else in the world, while denouncing the country's judiciary for fulfilling its constitutional obligations on behalf of a brain-damaged woman it found did not want that assistance on 21 separate occasions.

Even America's national sport has been compromised. Baseball players have become the athletic version of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, re-writing the record book with a little help from steroids and a lust to perform at any cost. The only guys who can out-do Babe Ruth and Roger Maris need help from a needle.

And even at this year's Academy Awards, the producers who won for the best film documentary, The Children's March, a category anchored in reality, neglected to tell the judges that half of their film was performed by actors and faked with stressed film and old cameras. The great contemporary national ends, power and celebrity-hood, have abandoned traditional American values of integrity and true leadership for the benefit of a very few.

I for one sat gape-jawed, when the president of the United States admitted that he had unleashed the world's most deadly military on another sovereign nation on the basis of allegations that were "dead wrong" on all counts.

If an individual claiming self-defense in a murder charge was proven to be wrong on the basis of his use of deadly force, the obvious conclusion would be that he was guilty of a grave offence. In the president's case, he not only failed to accept responsibility for a decision that led to the deaths of thousands of people, he walked off the White House stage and left it to the authors of his own presidential commission to face the music.

Making matters worse, this little man from Texas continued to assert the right of pre-emptive war, even though his own investigators found that America knows next to nothing about the weapons programs of so-called "rogue nations."

Without a real perceived threat to America, what President Bush did was flatly unconstitutional.

Strange as it may seem, Terri Schiavo's lasting legacy may be that she was the person who chronicled even better than the Iraq war the decline of the American Republic from the land of Bendix to the world of Bush. President Bush's emergency legislation to save Terri Schiavo was unconstitutional. As Bush appointee, Mr. Justice Stanley Birch of the 11th Circuit court in Atlanta put it, "the legislative and executive branches of our government ... have acted in a manner demonstrably at odds with our Founding Fathers' blueprint for the governance of a free people -- the Constitution."

As in Iraq, so too in Terri Schiavo. So what are we to make of the view of the leader of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives, Tom DeLay, who 17 years ago pulled the plug on his own father who was in a vegetative state and had no living will?

DeLay bitterly accused the courts of "thumbing their nose at Congress and the president," and predicted that the time would come when "the men responsible for this will answer for their behaviour."

Does that sound like support for an independent judiciary and the separation of powers between the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches of the U.S. government as guaranteed by the Constitution to you?

It isn't God Bless America anymore, but God Save Her.

Salaam (Peace be upon you), Andrea (Saleema)   "To God belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth. Whether you show what is in your own selves or conceal it, God will call you to account for it. Then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills, for God is Able to do all things."  (Qur'an 2:284).
