UK General Elections

Assalamualaikum
Muslims in the UK, including Malaysian Students who are eligible and wish to vote in the UK, are strongly encouraged to follow the guidance issued by Muslim Association of Britain and Muslim Council of Britain for UK General Elections, to be held on 5th May 2005.

In general, most Muslim Associations are recommending "Respect" party, of which there are very high proportion of Muslim Candidates standing for election. Please visit their website for more info:
http://www.respectcoalition.org/.

Since Respect is relatively a small party, it only has candidates for few areas. As such, MAB and MCB have issued guidance and recommended list of candidates. Please visit their websites for more info:

News: The General Elections; Guidelines and Recommendations

For a number of years now, the Muslim Association of Britain has advocated that the
time has come for the Muslim vote, estimated at more than 1.2 million, to be taken seriously particularly when events at home and abroad have had a direct effect on Muslims more than any other community in Britain.

It is worth noting that the Muslim community has the potential to influence the outcome of the elections in more than 40 constituencies through their vote alone, and far more if coordinated with other sectors of their respective local constituencies.

MAB urges Muslim voters to assess candidates by considering the main issues which affect British Muslims and reflect their interests and where each one stands, regardless of party affiliation.

MAB proposes, as a result of its lengthy and thorough consideration, that these issues be:

1) Public Services, including Schools and Health Care
2) The Anti- Terror legislation Bill
3) The war on Iraq and the withdrawal of British troops
4) Stand on Palestine and Kashmir
5) The out-law of religious discrimination.
6) Islamaphobia and the attacks on the British Muslims

Notwithstanding the above, MAB wishes to affirm that any sitting MP who voted against the recently proposed Anti-Terror legislation and against war and calls for immediate withdrawal of British troops in Iraq must be supported for re-election, regardless of their party.

Any sitting MP who voted with the anti-terror legislation and voted for and continues to support war in Iraq should not be supported for re-election.

In order to achieve maximum impact, MAB recommends that the Muslim community, through their local organisations, mosques and groups, meets with all the candidates standing in their respective constituencies and puts to them the issues listed above and any other issues of local significance which it feels appropriate.

Constituencies where there is a real risk of the emergence of a candidate who belongs to the far or extreme-right, must consider their options in light of this and coordinate efforts with all other sections of their constituencies to prevent such an outcome.

The Muslim Association of Britain looks forward to another election where Muslims will turn out in numbers and will influence the outcome in a positive and constructive manner and in an effort to bring about what is best for their community, local constituency and country.

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}
(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all."
[Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
