At least three people have been killed and nearly 50 were injured when
police in Afghanistan clashed with people protesting over reports that
US soldiers were desecrating Islam's holy Koran at Guantanamo Bay.

Witnesses reported seeing police open fire as a crowd of mainly
students rampaged through the eastern city of Jalalabad.

There are mixed reports on the size of the crowd, which was estimated
at somewhere between several hundred and several thousand.

Western security sources said the crowd set fire to the offices of a
number of aid agencies, including the United Nations Childrens Fund
UNICEF.

"We have registered 48 injured and one person has died in the
hospital, said Laiq Ahmed, chief doctor at the public health hospital
in the eastern city of Jalalabad, adding the person died from bullet
wounds.

"Another ambulance has just arrived at the scene," he said.

A local police source told AFP the crowd of up to 10,000 people took
to the streets to protest a report in Newsweek magazine that claimed
interrogators keep copies of the Koran in toilets at the Guantanamo
Bay facility to annoy prisoners.

The report said US personnel had flushed a copy of the holy book down
the toilet.

The US State Department said it is looking into the report.

Jalalabad police chief Abdul Rehman told AFP that police fired into
the air to control the mob.

"Initially the demonstrators were peaceful but then a group joined
them and the mob turned violent, attacking buildings and setting them
on fire," he said.

A western security source based in the city said one of the offices
set alight was that of ACBAR, the main coordinator of international
NGOs in Afghanistan.

An international aid worker in Jalalabad told the BBC he saw groups of
people running along the streets apparently looking for foreigners and
anyone working for an NGO.

All UN and other foreign aid workers have been told to move to safe areas.

US troops have reportedly been deployed on the streets to maintain order.

More than 500 detainees are still held at the US naval base and
detention centre in Guantanamo Bay after being arrested following the
September 11 attacks.
