Economic Boycott An Effective & Non Violent Tool for the Muslim World

Boycotting of products & services from countries which are hostile to Islam & Muslims is a popular call from a major section of the Muslim world in the current political climate in the world today.

What is required is an objective assessment of the boycott call rather than an emotional one. Economic Boycott is an Effective & Non Violent Tool. If used judiciously, we can cause a major impact in the world economy.

At the outset we have to accept that the Muslim world is depended to a great extent on the Non Muslim world in the fields of technology, education, defense etc. For instance we cannot imagine the Muslim world boycotting IT related products from America.

We need to have a pro-active system or attitude set in place on how we approach to products from Non Muslim countries or Non Muslim owned organizations. This system should be implemented at an individual / organizational level rather than at government level. This will ensure that there are no tensions between governments. And it should be implemented in any political climate. Basically it is economics Demand & Supply. Some of the points that can be part of this system are:

Point 1

All Non Essential products & services from Non Muslim countries or Non Muslim owned organizations which has no use to an individuals health, spiritual well being, academic & professional career should be boycotted.

Point 2

When an individual intends to purchase a product/service he/she should follow the following sequence:

  • First Preference to one produced in a Muslim country or Muslim owned organization.
  • Second Preference to one produced in a Non Muslim country or Non Muslim owned organization which is not hostile to Islam & Muslims.
  • As a last option, when the first 2 options does not work out then one can resort to buy from any country / organization even though they may be hostile to Islam & Muslims. Or if the individual can survive without this product he or she can forgo from purchasing it.

In the absence of a coordinated system, what we find is a reactive attitude of the Muslim world (like always for any cause) to a particular situation. This is short sighted & fruitless. Or is it wishful thinking to expect the Muslim world to work as a collective unit for a common cause.

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all."
