Sheikh Waleed El-Sannany has been detained for nine and a half years without charge or trial because he expressed the opinion that the activities of the Saudi government were blasphemous. He has not been allowed to meet any other prisoners during this entire period, not even his own son who is also being detained at the same prison. His feelings at that blessed meeting can only be imagined.

Sheikh Nasser El-Fahd has been detained for one and a half years because he issued a Fatwa that allowed the prisoners to escape from security forces, using force when necessary. When his life was threatened he at first changed his position publicly, but later returned to his principles.

Sheikh Mejali El Sabouk has been detained for a year accused of conspiring to assassinate Prince Abdullah, an accusation for which no evidence has been adduced.

Saad bin Sheikh Said bin Zoeir, who has been detained for two and a half years because of his campaign to free his father who has been imprisoned for eight years without trial. Zoeir was then released but re-imprisoned eight months ago because he expressed his opinions and has never been allowed to see his father who is held in the same prison.

Mohamed El-Maayouf, along with other supporters of Dr Said El-Faqih and his reform program have been detained for different periods of time from a month to a year, all without trial. |
Also identified that day were Ali El-Faqsay El-Ghamdy, Abdel Moneim El-Ghamdy, Amin E-Ghamdy, Said El-Yamy, Abdullah El-Shethry, Abdel Majid El-Awwad, Ahmed El-Hossan, Moflih El-Ghamdy, Yehya El-Zahrany, Saleh El-Faqsay El-Ghamy, Bandar El-Ghamdy, Youssef El-Shabant, Torki El-Fahid, Khaled El-Emeiry. Hassan El-Dossary, Mashari El-Atiby, Seif bin Wahaf, Ali El- Felij, Mohamed El-Shehry Fahd El-Dossary, Ahmed El-Anzi, Zoueir Al-Thabeity, Salem El-Seif, Mohamed El-Meteiry, Helal El-Asseiry, Abdullah El-Ghamdy, Khaled El-Kahtany, Abdel-Latif El-Kathiry, Abu Osama El-Bahreiny, including others among them.
All of the prisoners are deprived of the most basic rights; they cannot contact a lawyer and they are held without any formal charge. They do not know what crime they have been accused of and they do not know when their investigation or detention will be over. Some have served their sentences but remain behind bars and all of them are subjected to appalling treatment including torture, threats, and insults.
On this blessed day of the Feast Fire, all the prisoners met each other for the first time and for a short period, they were allowed some of their basic rights. They had Asr prayer all together, something that had been forbidden. They gathered around Sheikh Waleed El-Sannany, the respected elder that had expressed his opinion regarding the blasphemy being carried out by the Saudi government, and who had at the time produced the evidence to substantiate his charge.
This was followed by a discussion of various topics. Sheikh Nasser El-Fahd said that he regretted having encouraged Dr Ayed El-Qurany last year when he publicly withdrew his Fatwas. He stressed that he was forced to meet him. He then wrote a letter to Prince Nayef stating frankly his ideas about the infidel government and Prince Nayef himself. For his part, El-Qurany said that he is now prepared to stand by his rulings, even if the Saudi authorities carry out their threats to kill him, astatement which met with the general acclaim of his fellow inmates.
The meeting lasted till sunset, when those fasting broke their fasts and they prayed Maghrib all together. Sheikh Ali El-Falij gave a sermon and the assembly broke up into small groups. After praying Isha together, the prison administration declared the maintenance operations complete and ordered the prisoners back to their cells.
What happened next was inspiring. The prisoners declared their collective defiance in order to take advantage of this rare situation and spend as much time as possible with each other. In one instance they formed a ring about Borges El-Dousary, who had been accused in the Panda case. He repented for his actions and declared that he will go to Iraq after his release. His meeting with the religious elders and youth in prison clearly had an affect on him.
With the evening chill the prisoners made their farewells and went back to their cells. Here they discovered that some of their possessions had been stolen by a spiteful prison administration. This kind of behavior is a drop in the ocean ofinjustice inside the Saudi prisons that are so much in need of reform.
This is the description of an unusual day, the day of the Blessed Feast Fire in El-Hayer prison and reveals only a small portion of the sufferings of the prisoners. It is also an appeal to every honest person to do whatever he can to relieve the prisoners of their injustices. The injustice that burdens them can strike anyone, especially in a country that has no place for freedom.
We should point out that the fire did not harm anyone Alhamdulilah. Peace and blessings be on our Prophet Mohammad, his family, and his companions.

Susan,
You might find it of some interest that on 24 November of last year it
was reported that an Israeli company (Magal Security Systems) was
awarded a US$3.4 million dollar contract to provide security systems
for Correctional Services Canada. The Globes (Israel's version of the
Financial Times or Wall Street Journal) article I found this on stated
that, "CSC is a long-standing Magal customer." These tend to be
high-tech services, not personel training. Still, defense and
security exports make up a huge part of Israel's economy and allow it
to subsidize the settlements and occupation without too much economic
stress on its own populace. Also, being the third largest arms
exporter in the world goes a long ways towards explaining the
diplomatic and economic support Israel gets from a surprising number
of countries (including Muslim countries). If one is interested in
the boycott/divestment/sanctions campaign, maybe that would be a good
place to start, Canadian imports of Israeli security and defense
equipment.
