Question As-Salamu `alaykum. I've read that only some of our du`a’s will be answered in this life and some will be saved for the Hereafter; but doesn't verse 34 in surat Ibrahim “and He giveth you of all ye ask of Him” means that Allah gives us all (not some) that we've asked for? Jazakum Allah Khayran
Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In fact, when a person makes du`a’, Almighty Allah answers his supplications either in this world by giving him what he asks for or in the Hereafter by giving him reward and depositing that reward for him or saving him from a bad thing.

As for the verse of surat Ibrahim, it comes in a context where Almighty Allah reminds people with His blessings on them. He reminds them that He has given them from everything they ask for; meaning that He has provided them with all their needs that make them lead a good life on earth. This includes all people, believers and unbelievers. Of course, it unreasonable to claim that unbelievers do supplicate to Allah, since they originally do not believe in Him. So the meaning should go like this: It is Him Who has given you all the things you need so that you can lead an easy life on the earth. On the Day of Resurrection, everyone will witness the outcome of his/her own deeds and as you sow, you shall reap.

Question As-Salamu `alaykum.

I read somewhere that during the sujud (prostration) while praying, we must not ask Allah whatever we want, and that we must only say some of the known du`a’s such as the Prophet’s supplications. Is it true? Jazkum Allah Khyran

It is not a condition to ask Allah in prostration during prayer by du`a’s (supplications) that were reported by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

However, Muslim scholars have unanimously agreed that a Muslim is highly encouraged to ask Allah for matters related to the Hereafter in prostration during prayer. It is preferable that one memorizes some of the well-known supplications of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to be said in this position.

But, Muslim scholars differed regarding whether it is allowed to ask Allah during prayer for worldly matters or not. Some scholars are of the opinion that this is not allowed during prayer. But the most correct view is that it is permissible for a Muslim to ask Allah for whatever he wants in prostration during prayer.

O Allah, O Sufficer of the isolated and weak and Protector against terrifying affairs! Offenses have isolated me, so there is none to be my companion. I am too weak for Thy wrath and there is none to strengthen me. I have approached the terror of meeting Thee and there is none to still my fear. I beg for Your Mercy!  Ameen
