Doing business with the United States may be to some extent acceptable but having military or defence pact with the country which has a long history of betraying the friends is no good deal, observes SOROOR AHMED

An interesting aspect of India’s foreign policy is that when the world was bipolar we stood strongly behind the Communist Soviet Union – even at the cost of being publicly abused by the Americans – and now that the world has become unipolar we have become the staunchest supporter of the Capitalist United States of America. We chose to throw our lot behind the Soviet Union at the time when our relationship with Pakistan was at its worst – we fought wars in 1965 and 1971 – and when China invaded and captured a huge track of land in October-November 1962 in North East and Kashmir. Now that China is in no mood to fight us and Pakistan no match to take on in an open battle we are going all out to “befriend” the United States. In fact, our foreign policymakers are not content with befriending US but can go to any extent to please this lone Super Power of the world.

Doing business with the United States may be to some extent acceptable but having military or defence pact with the country which has a long history of betraying the friends is no good deal. What if the US at last recognised us as a nuclear state. Even if they do not recognise us as a nuclear state, it does not matter much and we would continue to remain so.

It does not need to be a communist – as the Left Front is opposing defence pact with the US – to oppose India’s foreign policy towards the lone Super Power. How can we trust Republican Henry Kissinger, the US secretary of state under President Richard Nixon in early 1970s, that India is our good friend when during the 1971 war with Pakistan he and Nixon were the persons who abused the then PM Indira Gandhi as a witch, bitch and what not. How can the same Republican George Bush be so generous towards India. The truth is that if the global situation changes, once again the US leaders would use the expletives like those cited above for the Indian leaders. The tone of the language may be even worse.

If Indian policymakers were dominated by the Left-leaning intellectuals in the earlier age – they always supported close ties with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) – today plutocracy prevails over democracy in India. In the post-1991 years the entrepreneur class calls the shot and even influence the foreign and economic policies of the country.

India’s relationships with the Soviet Union and the United States were/are quite different in nature. If some ideological driven intellectuals, journalists, politicians and bureaucrats contributed to cementing the ties with the USSR, it is the crass consumerism and capitalism which have pushed us towards the United States. While language emerged as a factor behind improving ties with the United States – and the United Kingdom, too – it had become really difficult to give a boost to the people-to-people relationship with the Soviet Union.

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}
(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all."
[Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
