The House of Allah - the Masjid - commands the greatest respect and honour. The sanctity of the Masjid is well defined by the Shariáh and known to most of us.

When Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) advised that the best of places are the Masjids, it is understood that at the Masjid one acquires peace, tranquility and contentment of the heart. The Ibaadat of Allah Taãla demands deep concentration which can only be truly attained in a serene and tranquil atmosphere. Thus the serenity should prevail at all times in the Masjid.

It is indeed unfortunate nowadays that some people have made the Masjid a meeting place to discuss worldly affairs and events.

Remember, the next time that you are in the Masjid don't discuss anything other than what is absolutely necessary. Also, do not even discuss anything necessary in such a manner that it disturbs others in the Masjid.

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) warned those who violate the sanctity of the House of Allah Taãla that such violation is a cause of the displeasure of Allah Taãla.

  • Hadhrat Hassan Basri (Rahmatullaahi Álayhi) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, 'A time will come upon the people that their talk - in the Masjid - will be their worldly matters, so don't sit with them; for Allah Taãla is not in need of them.' (Mishkãt p. 71)
  • Hadhrat Abu Huraira (Radhiyallaahu Ánhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, 'When the Masaajid become noisy await for red winds, earthquakes, raining stones, changing of faces, swallowing of the earth and many more punishments.' (Mishkãt p. 470)
  • It is reported in a Hadith that when a person engages in worldly talk in the Masjid an angel says to him, 'Keep quite O friend of Allah'. If he continues in his worldly chatter, the angel says for the second time, 'Keep quite O enemy of Allah'. If he still persists, the angel finally says to him, 'Keep quite, may the curse of Allah be upon you'. (Aadabul Masaajid p. 6)

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}
(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all."
[Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
