Dear Readers AA Why do men have nipples ? , this is the title of a new book which hits the book stores in New York yesterday. It is written by Billy Goldberg who is a physician. He says, "while only females have mammary glands, we all start out in a similar way in the embryo. The embryo follows a female template untill about six weeks, when the male sex chromosomes kicks in. Men, however, have already developed nipples".
I found this information interesting not from the view point of human biology or genetics but it helps to understand the meaning of a very very important verse in the Quran. The verse 4:1 reads, "Ya ayuhannasu utaqu rabbakum ullazee khalaqakum min nafsin wahidatin wa khalaqa minha zaujaha wa batha minhumah rijalun kathirun wa nissa..." This verse refers to the creation of first couple, Adam and Eve. According to Biblical story and also in the Hadith literature, it is said that God created Adam first and then from one of his ribs created Eve. All the scholars from beginning till now have understood 'Nafsin Wahdatin' as a male gender but interestingly, the pronoun 'ha' in the above verse suggests this as a female gender. You pick up any translation, you will see that none of these explained why Quran had used female pronoun for the 'Nafs'. It is because, firstly they do not know the human biology and gentics and secondly they got highly confused by the Biblical stories and the Hadith literature. Although, the language of Quran is very simple, clear and easy and its facts are absolutely scientific but to understand it correctly one must have the right kind of knowledge. In the light of above information, we can conclude that in verse 4;1 'Nafs' does not mean 'a soul' or 'a person' but it refers to the embryonic stage of development of the human species and that the embryo follows the female template untill about six weeks when the male sex chromosomes kicks in. Hence, the pronoun 'ha' for the 'Nafs' is a correct expression. It also proves the divine origin of Quran because it is not possible for a human mind to express and explain so succinctly and such a great scientic fact in a single pronoun as simple as 'ha'. This pronoun had puzzled the scholars over the centuries and still is a riddle for many of them. For example, let us read the interpretation of a great scholar of our time 'Maulan Abu ala'la Maudoodi'. After reflecting a little bit and speculating on the subject he ends up by saying: " we should not go into details about the creation of Adam and Eve and leave the subject succinct as God did. I wish he should have reflected more or let it remained open for the scientific knowledge. Thanks Bashir Abid __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
