Polygamy, polygyny
Q. 33.50-2; Prophet limit of wives
"It is not lawful for thee (Prophet to marry more) women after this
nor to change them for (other) wives even though their beauty
attract thee except any thy right hand should possess (as
handmaidens): and Allah doth watch over all things."
Q. 4.3; Limit four wives
"if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the
orphans marry women of your choice two or three or four; but if ye
fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them) then only
one or (a captive) that your right hands possess. That will be more
suitable to prevent you from doing injustice."
Q. 4.129; Can't be just between women
"Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women even if it
is your ardent desire: but turn not away (from a woman) altogether
so as to leave her (as it were) hanging (in the air). If ye come to
a friendly understanding and practice self-restraint Allah is Oft-
Forgiving Most Merciful."
Question: What should be the approach for brothers who want to take
a second wife in America?
Imam W.D. Mohammed:
Leave America, Allahu Akbar. Now I don't know whether that came from
my jinn or from my angel but I know it came from me. Now I'm going
to try to come from wisdom. It was just a spontaneous response, ok?
No one was in control so it must have been the jinn or angel. We
should first know what polygamy is in AI Islam, we should first be
very clear; believe me it means more than one wife.
Prophet marriages to assist widow, weld tribes
The limit as you know is four wives but the Prophet (pbuh) had 9
wives, most authorities say 9, some say 12. The Prophet (pbuh)
accepted that he have 9 wives.
He was accepting wives not because he needed sex, he was accepting
wives to strengthen the ummah, the community. And the wives that he
married were women that would not have been attractive to the
average man who is looking for a wife, they were over age. Or they
had been married before and had children and were beyond that, too
old for child bearing, they were all women who were at the mercy of
society. And most of them were women who had enjoyed status, respect
in society and now the war had taken their husbands away or for some
reason they were separated from their husbands and in some cases it
was they were converted to A1 Islam and the husband wasn't and these
women needed support from the society.
So the Prophet (pbuh) accepted them mainly to give them support from
the society and to benefit the community of Al Islam or the work of
A1 Islam to benefit from their reputation, their high standing that
they had in their tribe or among their people. So the Prophet knew,
he was a strategist, he was diplomatic and he was a great strategist.
He knew that if he married a certain woman that her tribe would feel
a family connection with Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and would feel
obligated then to look at him not as a person who is outside of
their tribe or a person outside of their way of thinking, but they
have to look at him now as a family member. And by them accepting
him as a family member their prejudices would be left and they would
see his value with clear eyes rather than eyes prejudiced by their
opinion of him before he became one of them and they would become
Muslim and that is exactly what happened.
1 Kings 11:1-3; Solomon 700 wives 300 concubines
But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the
daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites,
Zidonians, and Hittites; [2] Of the nations concerning which the
Lord said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them,
neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away
your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. [3]
And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred
concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.
Many non-Muslims became Muslim because of Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh)
marriage to members of their tribe or to members of their
association. So this was very wise of him and I'm sure he would have
kept increasing the number until he got maybe as many as Solomon of
the Bible had. I think Solomon had 700 wives or something like that
So G-d gave him revelation and it is with us now in Quran and He
told him that he wouldn't be permitted to have any more wives. And
he stopped at that number some say 9, some say 12. Now if that is
why the Prophet (pbuh) took on other wives then you and I when we're
thinking about taking on more wives we should benefit from the
Prophet's (pbuh) reason for taking on more wives.
Q. 4.24; Marry not for lust
"Thus hath Allah ordained (prohibitions) against you: except for
these all others are lawful provided ye seek (them in marriage) with
gifts from your property desiring chastity not lust."
Allah (swt) put it in the Quran so that we support the Prophet's
(pbuh) reason when we look for other wives. First Allah (swt) says
do not marry for lust, that means sexual desire. Don't marry a
woman, that should not be your reason for marrying her, that you
want to have sex with her, that is out, that is eliminated.
Your first reason should be that you are attracted to her as a
female human person it should not be because you want to have sex
with her. If that's your reason you are no more than a dog in heat,
you are less than a wolf because a wolf won't have sex with a female
wolf just to have sex. A wolf has sex with a female wolf to have a
family. The male is just conscious of being in a family as the
female, the male will even step into the role of the female to
protect the children when she can't to it, this is the wolf. I
would like to tell you a lot of things I don't have time, that is
good for us. En sha Allah I need to write a lot of books.
Q. 4.3; Limit four wives
Allah (swt) says also "And marry women" and He gives the numbers up
to four, "But if you cannot be fair by orphans then only one," this
is in the Quran. Now I used to think that was because I wasn't
really as familiar with all of this language in Quran way back then
as I am now.
I was thinking that G-d was saying that one is best for you. One
translation says that, "One is best if you understood." But I don't
think so, that translation shouldn't read like that because it does
not say that in Arabic, it is not put that way in Arabic. I won't
say any more than Allah (swt) is saying. I don't want you to have
but one wife , no Allah (swt) is not saying that.
Q. 2.221; Believing slave is better than unbeliever
Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters) until they believe; a
slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman even
though she allure you. Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until
they believe: a man slave who believes is better than un unbeliever
even though he allure you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the
fire. But Allah beckons by His grace to the Garden (of Bliss) and
forgiveness and makes His Signs clear to mankind: that they may
celebrate His praise.
Also Allah (swt) says a believing slave is better than a free
idolater, idol worshiper, it didn't say a believing slave in A1
Islam is better than a free Christian it didn't that. It didn't say
better than a free Jew. It didn't say better than a free Sabein
because that is another religion respected in the Quran that was in
that part of the world. It means better than a mushirkeen, that
person who worships idols, that is one of the pagans.
No sex without marriage in AI Islam
What does that tell us? That tell us the men in the following of
Muhammad (pbuh) were having marital relations - - understand this,
there is no sex in AL-Islam without marriage. Any sex outside of
marriage in AL-Islam is a serious sin punishable by flogging in the
public, public whipping. And that is something that most of us
didn't understand before, many of you here today you probably don't
understand that. There is no sex without marriage, you don't need a
preacher in AL-Islam to be married, you don't need an Imam in AL-
Islam to be married all you need in AL-Islam to be married is the
woman you want and two witnesses.
Preferably witness from her side two and also witnesses your side
which will be three, but if you have anybody just one witness from
her family, from her side or her close friend if she doesn't have
family members and a witness from your side, if those witnesses are
there, if they are female you need two, males you can have only one
from her side. Then that is enough for you to get married.
Q. 30.30; A1 Islam is the religion of nature
So set thou thy face steadily and truly to the Faith: (Establish)
Allah's handiwork according to the pattern on which He has made
mankind: no change (let there be) in the work (wrought) by Allah:
that is the standard Religion: but most among mankind understand not.
AL-Islam as it is read in Arabic "Led deene haneefan fetratal-laahel
latee fataran naasa `alayhaa," translated it means AL-Islam is the
religion of natural origin, the pattern on which He patterned human
society. This religion believes in the excellence of nature and G-d
created human beings to live up to and live out the excellence of
nature that He created the human for; this is AL-Islam.
Q. 10.16; I lived a lifetime among you
Say: "If Allah had so willed I should not have rehearsed it to you
nor would He have made it known to you. A whole lifetime before this
have I tarried amongst you: will ye not then understand?"
So AL-Islam is a religion that wants to make us aware that G-d
evolved your life upon the pattern of nature. The nature of a human
being is the nature of human even before G-d revealed anything, no
Prophet, no Messenger nothing.
Muhammad (pbuh) is a sign of that, Muhammad (pbuh) had lived 40
years and didn't even know revealed religion but he had stayed away
from worshiping idols, he had stayed away from bad behavior. There
was no fault seen in him as a human being.
Jesus is a sign, Muhammad fulfilled the sign
Q. 23.50; Jesus is a sign
And We made the son of Mary and his mother as a Sign: We gave them
both shelter on high ground affording rest and security and
furnished with springs.
He had no human flaws, nothing bad about him, he didn't need A1
Islam to make him a better human being. A1 Islam didn't make
Muhammad (pbuh) a better human being, he was already the best human
he could be. He didn't drink , he didn't lie, he didn't steal, he
respected what was supposed to be respected, he was loving and
charitable, he was just perfect as a human being. Jesus Christ is a
sign of that Muhammad (pbuh) is that fulfilled. Jesus as a sign
points to that.
Adam didn't need revelation, his life supported excellence
Was Muhammad a new man, was this the first time G-d ever had a human
being on earth like that? No, Adam was like that, your first father
was like that, he didn't need revelation, his life that G-d gave him
was enough to support him coming into the excellence that G-d
intended for his creation. That is why Allah (swt) says in Quran
Allah (swt) says of Muhammad (pbuh) "He already lived among you a
lifetime" and what do you think it means? It doesn't mean after
revelation. G-d is pointing to Muhammad telling those people who
were rejecting him, his life before I talked to him, before he met
Me is proof to you of his excellence and your responsibility to
support him. He was already established worthy of your support
before I even communicated anything to him, it said he already lived
a lifetime among you.
Q. 33.21; You have in Muhammad an excellent model
Ye have indeed in the Apostle of Allah a beautiful pattern of
(conduct) for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day and
who engages much in the praise of Allah.
G-d says, "Certainly you have in Muhammad (pbuh) the most excellent
model Uswatan hasanatan for any who believe in G-d and final day and
whoever praises G-d." For any, it did not say for Muslim but for
anyone, a Jew, a Christian, a Sabian, a Buddhist any who has faith
in Gd and the final day. Now you know they may call G-d differently
by name and have a different idea of G-d but they still have a
belief in the destiny and accountability for the way they live. So
any of those people should find in Muhammad (pbuh) an excellent
example, and they do. They love him, they respect him.
Getting back to you the brothers understand that Al Islam respects
nature and wants us to be reconnected with nature as a human being,
conscious person believing that nature evolves life to be most
excellence.
Q. 2.221; Believing slave is better than unbeliever
The Quran says a believing female slave is better than a free female
idol worshiper though you may in your mind think differently about
it, this is what G-d revealed. Now what does that say? That says
that Muslim men were permitted, when this revelation came, to have
their female slaves that converted to A1 Islam, they were not told
not to, but they were discouraged when it came to choosing an idol
worshiper from their slaves.
They were not told, "You can't do it," but they were discouraged.
I'm saying all that because it is important that 1 don't miss these
important points while addressing you, while addressing the question
that the brother asked for us, that does not require all of these
other concerns that I am bringing out. But it situates us better to
make decisions. That is why I am bringing these things out.
Sex without marriage is punishable in Islam
In Islamic law, we don't know this, if you have sex with a woman, a
female and she complains against you, that you are not accepting her
as a wife or treating her as a wife, the judge in an Islamic court
overseas out of America and in America, some of these are in
American - - I'm sure these immigrant they have their own courts
believe me, they make their own decisions many times, especially if
their members come to them for decision.
The judge will say, "Did you have sex with her?" And the man he
says, "Yes." He (Judge) will say, "Then you are her husband," in Al
Islam if you have sex with a woman you are either her husband or
you're an offender that has to be punished. So if you say, "No I'm
not her husband" then the judge will say, "Take him out." But if you
say, "Yes she's my wife," then she's your wife.
Wife originally meant mate; that means when you come together
sexually you mated her. Animals mate and humans mate, so when you
mate, that is it, she is your wife. Now maybe you didn't intend it
to be that way, that is the way it is in A1 Islam. If you mated with
her she is your wife.
I know all this stuff that exists among Muslims, you don't have to
tell me, after I leave here I'm sure some brother is going to
say, "Yeah the Imam doesn't know all what's happening in the Islamic
world because they have this convenient marriage, you can marry
temporarily."
Muta temporary marriage is high class prostitution
Bukhari 5-527; Muta no ternporary marriage
All bin Ali Talib reported On the day of Khaibar, Allah's Apostle
forbade the Mut'a (i.e. temporary marriage).
No there is no temporary marriage that is bidah, that is an
unaccepted innovation; because you are away from home and you don't
have your wife with you, your host is going to provide you with a
woman temporarily, that is a whore. That's not a wife, I'm going to
go with her for convenience because my wife is not with me that's a
prostitute that's not my wife. And you are going to pay him or her,
him through her. He's a pimp and you are going to pay him directly
or she is going to ask you to give her so much and then he will get
his later. So that's a high class way of prostituting women in the
Islamic world, it's not accepted.
So brother you said, "How should I the approach a second wife?" I'm
answering your question right now. During the time of Muhammad the
Prophet (pbuh) which the commentaries in the Quran in English will
give you much of what I'm giving you now, Muhammad (pbuh) had to
engage in fighting, he had to be in war for much of the time that he
was on earth. So a lot of women lost their husbands, a lot of
children became orphans and they already had problems of the society
even before war.
Now it is complicated by more men not being with their family so
therefore, men needed to accept more wives. There was a need for men
to accept more wives and there was a need for men to accept those
wives and not be insensitive to the needs of their children if they
had children. So it was established to protect wives from
prostitution because many of these women they weren't converts from
Christianity or Judaism, they were converts from idol worship.
And idol worship didn't teach them refined behavior for sex and
everything, how you should guard your sexual life, it didn't teach
them that. So these women if they didn't have food to eat they
thought nothing of going out in the street and standing in the road
and saying, "Would you like to have a pretty woman?" Prostitute
themselves, so they would prostitute themselves. So to reduce the
likelihood of them going into prostitution the Prophet (pbuh) was
inspired by G-d to encourage men to marry these women and to give a
home to the orphan.
We live in a different world nowadays where the taxes are collected
so that we have institutions and whatever, organizations to protect
the society. In those days you didn't have jails, you have to
understand the reality of that time, you didn't have jails and you
didn't have social institutions, family service institutions etc.
So how was that need addressed? By men who had wealth and could
afford to feed more people. So they were encouraged to take on the
wives and also take on orphans and provide food and clothing. And
many of them came from slaves and they came straight into the house
of these wealthy men to be protected by these better-off men. And
that's why you read in the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), "Feed
the slave the food you eat yourselves. And clothe the slave with the
clothing you wear yourselves." This was the teaching of Prophet
Muhammad (pbuh).
In other words, do not treat them in any way different than you
treat yourself and your family members, your own sons from your own
loins when it comes to providing their needs for them, you have to
give them the same. And so it would have been for education. So it
is reported in the history of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that one of
the Muslims said when he heard that he said, "What do I need a slave
for then?"
So wasn't that a clever way also to get rid of slavery`? Yes. So the
benefit of having a slave is that you don't have to give them what
you give a free person. Now Muhammad the Prophet (pbuh) was inspired
by G-d to tell them no you have to give them the same that you give
free people, the same clothing, the same food and the same
opportunities that you give your own member of your own family. So
that killed slavery. If this county had that it would have saved a
lot of lives, blood and suffering; if this country had been inspired
by G-d to handle it the way G-d handled it through Muhammad the
Prophet (pbuh). It would have been wonderful.
Muhammad the Prophet (pbuh) once heard one man calling his servant
the man said, "Ya abdee" it means "Oh my servant, or my slave" and
Muhammad the Prophet (pbuh) said "Call him not your Abd," why?
Because G-d says all people are the Ebaad of G-d, meaning all are
the servants of G-d or the slaves of G-d. He said, "Call him, say to
him my son." Like you would say to your own son,"My son." I go back
to the first - - these microphones are sensitive, this is a cordless
microphone isn't it? We are cordless too. Don't think industry is
ahead of G-d, industry is always trailing G-d, praise be to Allah
(swt).
Sex with the female means she is your wife
If you have sex with a female she becomes your wife don't forget
that, that is very important and that is the nature of man. G-d
didn't have to give you a book to know that. G-d created you with a
soul and with a mind, a nature and spirit to know how to respect
your sexual involvement with a woman. Your own conscience tells you
that this is a very serious thing I'm doing, but you usually wait
until you have a child and then both of you start to look at each
other different, right?
Sex is sacred it is that which extends life
G-d's purpose not our purpose for creating sex is so that we would
extend our life and our generation in our children. That is the most
sacred thing, the most sacred purpose for sex. It is to continue the
life of human beings so that we have more human beings coming. And
once we have that we want to look at the woman with a higher respect
and value her as our wife and the mother of our child, you see?
But some men they will have a woman for the first time and not have
her until she understands that he will say, "You know you're going
to be my woman now, right? That is that excellent nature in you,
that G-d evolved the world upon. You want her to know, "Yes I'm
going to have sex, now and you know you're going to be my woman
now." He doesn't say wife but that's my mate, you're my mate now.
And she loves that G-d has given her the nature to really love to
hear that from you.
Now I will answer your question in one statement: You approach it
with a clean heart, clean mind, clean and pure intentions. That's
how you approach a second wife and in light of what I have given you.
Q. 33.50-2; Prophet limit of wives

"Strive as in a race to achieve the
goal of excellence in all that you do."
