Doha: A Sri Lankan maid ran away from her sponsor's house and sought refuge in the office of the recruiting agency that had brought her here, only to be sexually harassed.

The domestic who arrived in Doha nearly a month ago, was fed up working for long hours and fighting sleep, so she decided to escape her employers. She somehow managed to reach the office of the manpower agency and there, an official allegedly tried to molest her. The incident, the maid told her country's embassy later, took place when she was alone in the office during lunch hours. She resisted and managed to run away from this place, too.

She came out of the agency's office and took a cab to the Sri Lankan embassy, reaching there on Tuesday afternoon. She narrated her woes to embassy officials. Seeing her alone in the office an employee of the manpower agency tried to kiss and sexually harass her, she alleged.

The embassy has asked for explanation from the agency and has in the mean time blacklisted it. This is not the first time the mission has blacklisted a recruiting agency.

"We have put some agencies on the black list in the past as well, but once an agency apologises, it is pardoned and its name is removed from the black list," said an embassy official. "This time, however, we are going to be firm. No apology will be accepted from this agency for one of its employees harassing our women," the official added.

He said the maid was being referred to the authorities concerned. Over the past two to three days some nine Sri Lankan maids have approached the embassy complaining of overwork, harassment and non-payment of salaries by their sponsors. One of them alleged she had suffered minor burn injuries in her hands as her employer's wife had accidentally thrown a spoon full of boiling oil on her.

At least two of them accused their employers of not having paid them salaries for five to six months, embassy officials said.

My Comments

It is a shame on men in particular & the society as a whole that poor & uneducated women have to go to foreign countries to do menial jobs to eke out a living. It is bad enough if these women do menial jobs within the country itself but it is a crime to let these women work overseas putting up with all sorts of harassments, hardships, in most instances not knowing the language of the country etc to keep the home fires burning.

Of course the government will not do anything constructive about it, because they are bringing in valuable foreign exchange. They do not want to rock the boat.

With these women going abroad we hear a lot of stories about broken homes, children neglected, the husbands making merry with the money sent home etc. On the other side of the coin we also hear stories about some of these women who are going abroad get involved in all sorts of vices & mischief. The long term impact of this to society will be enormous.

Having said this I do not know any quick fix which is going to solve this problem. Perhaps if the men are provided with steady & reasonable salary jobs whereby they can support their families without the women going abroad to do menial jobs could be one solution.
