Beaumont: Power was restored Friday to the Beaumont Civic Center, Police Station and Jail, the Jefferson County Courthouse, The Jack Brooks Federal Building, the Port of Beaumont, Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital and Parkdale Mall, plus nearby residential neighborhoods. The plan is to have service restored by Sunday evening to the Eastex Freeway area near Gladys and Delaware, Beaumont West and the water treatment plant in the Tyrrell Park area. Although residential neighborhoods will continue to have service restored, it still could be days and possibly even weeks before all residential customers have electricity. Entergy hopes to have power flowing to the ExxonMobil refinery this weekend. Crews are working in the west end and the Tanglewood area and parts of Major Dr. should see restoration today.
Aunt Myrtle lives in the Major Drive area. I plan to drive by there tomorrow to see if her power has been restored.
Squallie came to Beaumont today as did Tommy and Busso. They were able to get their mail from the post office. It was scheduled to be open until 4 pm, however when Squallie and I arrived at 3:45 three police officers told us it was already closed, and that we could come back on Sunday.
Squallie cut his yard and had the tree that was on his garage cut up and placed near the curb. He probably has the best looking yard in Beaumont right now.
I spent the afternoon piling up the tree branches that littered my mother's entire yard, street and driveway, along the curb. This is hot exhausting work that left me sweat drenched. I stayed the night so that I can finish the back yard tomorrow.
We are sill without power, however I brought a generator with me and am using it now to run this computer and a fan. I hadn't used the generator in years so I had to go through a learning curve to get the choke set just right so that it would run without surging and repeatedly restarting the computer.
I also brought a chain saw to cut up a tree in our front yard. I went to Sams and bought a cooler and some ice so I could stay hydrated in this heat. I'm glad I started today, so I can get the most strenuous work out of the way before Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting begins. It is expected to start on Tuesday after the new moon is sighted.
Squallie and I talked to power workers and asked them to make the Sprott hospital building a priority for power restoration as Delisa Bean is sheltering 21 storm family members there.
Another growing concern is garbage collection, which has not run since the storm struck 10 days ago. When power is out long enought for refrigerated food to spoil, then those who can empty them and the contents go into the city garbage cans on the street. Now they are becoming very rank with the odor of decaying food. Rotting meat smells particularly foul.
While it will obviously take weeks and probably months to collect all the tree debris, the garbage needs to be disposed of immediately.
I stopped working in the yard after sunset. Beaumont has a curfew in effect each day starting at 7 pm. However, I worked hard and didn't eat, and had no food in the house, so I ventured out to see if I could find a meal. It is erie driving after dark in a city without power. The only places I saw with power were the two hospitals, the Parkland Mall area around Dowlen Road, and the downtown area. While these areas had power, none of the businesses or restaurants were open.
The only place serving food after 7pm was a biker bar in the downtown entertainment district. They were grilling steaks on a charcoal griil, and served it with a baked potatoe and beans for $10. I headed back home about 9:30 pm. On the way I say the police stop a car. Another police car followed that one , and turned around to get behind me. When I turned left, he did too and put on his lights. He lectured me about being out after the curfew. When I explained about going out to get something to eat, he gave me a stern warning, and I promised not to violate the curfew again. I had passed other police around 8 pm, without any problem. I guess the later it gets, the more they crack down. I''m glad to see it. Its a real deterrant to looting. There has been very few reports of looting after the police made examples of the first few offenders.
