Question
Should Muslims appear on media outlets of their own like MeccaOne Radio or should they appear more on already popular media shows and programs?

Answer
Assalamu 'alaykum wa rahamatullahi wa barakatahu

Currently in America, there is a huge void with Muslim involvement in the media.

I would say that it is equally important for Muslims to appear on already popular shows as to create their own networks and stations.

The advantages of creating your own are that you have the freedom to control the content.

When appearing on a third party network/station, there may sometimes be certain restrictions that may prevent or even twist the message you want to transmit.

Allhamdulillah, MeccaOne operates on an already popular network in the Bay Area, California, on 90.5FM. They have a variety of music shows and talk shows and thus pull in people from all types of backgrounds. My show happens to be sandwiched between a music Rock show and a Sports show. In conclusion, due to the immense void, I would advise Muslims to pursue their media endeavors in either existing Muslim/non-Muslim networks or create their own while maintaining their Islamic principles.

Question
Following the 9/11 in the US and the 7/7 bombings in London many Muslims and non-Muslims were interviewed in different media to talk about Islam. The viewpoints they expressed were mainly personal and were not always based on established opinions in Islam but they are taken as matter of fact, even not always true. How should Muslims deal with such phenomena and should Muslims decline invitations for such quick interviews?

Answer
In our San Jose Masjid, we have set up a committee for exactly the problem you mention above. When the media call the Masjid for an interview, someone from the media committee is appointed who is especially trained to handle the media. I don’t think Muslims should decline interviews since our voices are rarely heard or seen in mainstream media. Instead, we should train our community and always ask the scholars and elders for guidance. We need to realize that we live in the post 9/11 era – the world is looking at us for answers. Are we prepared?

Question
Asslamu Alaikum Br. Omair,

With today's media trends and popular taste(especially among the youth, how can we create and promote Islamic media or the Message of Islam through the media? For example, most of the youth consider religous content to be boring and dry opposed to movies and dance shows?

Thanks for your time.

Answer Wa'laykum salam wa rhamatullahi wa barakatahu

Dear Amir

Indeed Shaytan’s marketing campaigns and industries are getting more advanced by the day with millions and billions of dollars being pumped in by the corporate shayateen. In times like these it is incumbent on us as parents and teachers to not only know and understand the culture of our youth, but to keep them close to us. This is the only way. The environment around us is too strong for us to just let them wander in it. The key is to offer the healthy Islamic alternative. In my radio programs, I often try to incorporate humor to make the “religious content” entertaining and uplifting to the heart. Inside the humor there is deep meaning and a message. The worst thing one can do is to impose or enforce the deen. Our job is to always present this beautiful deen with sugar and honey.

Question
If we look around the world, we find that the higher the level of women's rights, the better the economy of the people. In the United States and the other rich countries we are now seeing more female than male university graduates. Can the Moslem world expect to rise above being losers and victims without freeing their women?

Answer
Please read the following excellent article which clarifies the position of women in Islam:

The Social Involvement of Women in Islam

Question
What are your aspirations for the future of Muslim radio and media in general? and how do you evaluate it currently?

Answer
I think currently we are still testing the waters. Many of us have realized the importance of Muslim involvement in the media while others are just waking up from hibernation. I think the future is bright and I hope to see the best movies, documentaries, programs, etc to be made by Muslims of the highest quality, technology, morals, and values, that penetrate the heart and make our hair stand on end.

Ameen.

Question
Jazzak Allah khairan for the wonderful work you do brother.

How can we work towards making Muslim media as accessible as possible to Muslims who have widely different views of what constitutes 'Islamic'- especially in the West where Muslim communities tend to be rather sectarian?

Answer
Wa eyyak dear Tarek.

One thing that I think is unique about MeccaOne is that we have had Muslims on the show from various backgrounds with sometimes opposing views but we do not have them talk about their differences. We focus on
what we have in common and our greater goals as Muslims. We are living in a time where it is more important to unite as Muslims than to point fingers at our differences. Life is too short for that.

Question
Why is there is not a single English-speaking Muslim TV channel in the West? And how do you expect people to rethink their views?

Answer
Actually, there are several Muslim TV channels in the West but most of them are via satellite or cable networks. We are currently in a phase where we are improving our programming content. The current shows I have seen lack on many fronts but with the help of Allah(swt) the future looks bright. Nothing will come without a struggle.
