Georgetown Launches New PhD in Islamic Studies
Recent world affairs have prompted an increased demand for professionals and scholars with advanced knowledge of Arabic and expert knowledge of Islam. In response, Georgetown University has launched a new degree program leading to a Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Studies.
“Georgetown’s strengths in Arabic language as well as the history, culture, religion and society of the Muslim world make this new program an obvious addition to our academic offerings,” said Georgetown University Provost and Professor of Classics James J. O'Donnell. “I am confident that the new PhD in Islamic Studies will prepare future academics, professionals and leaders to rigorously tackle the critical issues facing the Muslim world today.”
Drawing on Georgetown’s unparalleled resources for study of the Islamic world through the Department of Arabic, the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, and the Departments of History, Theology and Government, the new PhD program will prepare students not only for scholarly careers in academia, but also to meet a rapidly growing demand in both the public and private sectors for those with expert knowledge of the language and culture of the Islamic world.
The inaugural class will begin in fall 2007 and applications will be accepted on a rolling basis through February 2007. Courses will seek to advance the knowledge and understanding of classical and modern Islamic religious thought and textual traditions. The program will also introduce students to traditional and modern scholarly approaches to the study of Islam, as well as provide training in history, religion, culture, society, languages, literatures and thought of the Islamic world.
Upon joining the program, students are expected to have achieved advanced proficiency in Arabic, as demonstrated by enrollment in advanced Arabic seminars and the ability to work with a variety of Islamic texts. Those with a master’s degree in a relevant field will take 12 courses or 36 credits, and students with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in an unrelated field are required to complete 18 courses or 54 credits. In addition to progressing to an advanced level of Arabic language, students in the program should demonstrate intermediate mastery of a second Islamic language such as Persian, Turkish or Urdu, as well as reading proficiency in a European research language such as French or German.
Associate Professor Ahmad Dallal, who is currently chair of the Arabic Department, will serve as director of the new program. Dallal earned his PhD in Islamic studies from Columbia University and his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the American University of Beirut. He is author of An Islamic Response to Greek Astronomy: Kitab Ta’dil Hay’at al-Aflak of Sadr al-Shari’a (Brill, 1995) and has written numerous articles and papers on the history of science, Islamic revivalist thought and Islamic law.
“The primary purpose of this program is to train specialists in Islam to respond to manifest needs at the academic and professional levels,” said Dallal. “It is also an opportunity for us at Georgetown to pool our remarkable resources and contribute to shaping the field by training a new generation of graduate students.”
Applications and additional program information will be available at: http://arabic.georgetown.edu/.

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.} (Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all." [Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
