SINGAPORE (Kyodo) -- Government ministers from the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations said Friday they have endorsed Japan's proposal
for cooperation to ensure a "smart" information and communications
technology network in the region.
The telecommunications and information technology ministers, in a joint
statement, agreed to cooperate with Japan to realize the "ASEAN Smart
Network Initiative," which Tokyo proposed in 2011 to support the 10-member
ASEAN's goal to develop its ICT capacity and enhance regional
"connectivity."
The ministers' two-day meeting here also involved separate meetings on
ICT-related issues with ministers or deputies from Japan, China and South
Korea.
Masahiro Yoshizaki, Japan's vice minister for policy coordination in the
Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication, said that through Japan's
initiative, it will assist ASEAN countries to proliferate high-speed
broadband in the region.
