.......ISLAMABAD : The Pakistan
Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has decided to provide
Internet facility to the educational institutions. A fund of Rs 148
million was approved for the project by the board of the company
here on Friday. The project would cost Rs 348 million and the
ministry of science and technology would give remaining finances,
the board was told.
.......In the first phase, about 50 educational institutions
would be provided Internet facility.
.......The meeting chaired by the Chairman,
Akhtar Ahmed Bajwa, also gave go-ahead signal to the company for
launching voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) project. The company
was also empowered to ink agreements with the bidders keeping in
mind credibility of the applicant.
.......During the meeting it was also decided
that the board would be kept informed on all stages of the new
projects such as operation, strategy, marketing and customers
care
.......The board also approved
policy of global mobile personal communication (GMPCS) project. The
PTCL has already signed services provider agreement with Thuraya for
distribution of terminal, SIMS cards, billing and customer care
function.
.......It approved new
projects for provision of transmission of media for expansion of
long distance telecom system. The meeting was told that the project
would earn Rs one billion to the company.
.......A handout issued here said the meeting
was told that company's performance for value-added service (VAS)
has been extraordinary and it installed 380,000 new telephone lines
during the current fiscal year.
.......It was also informed that prepaid cards
were providing Rs 1.4 billion annually.
.......The board appreciated the performance of
the company, it added.
