putting in a passive tap like those from Shomiti will allow for full duplex
monitoring, will not interfere with throughput if the tap fails ( a problem
if a
hub rolls over or is turned off) .  ISS has a lot of info on these types of
taps.

The down side is that one can not introduce kills (which under certain
conditions is good as a cracker could be trying to get the RS signature to
tell
if you are monitoring).
