Hardening your os involves installing all relevent patches to the operating
system, as well as changin configuration parameters to increase the overall
security level.  An example of Patches would be the varioius hot fixes and
Service packs for NT that fix vulnerability to such things as teardrop
attacks.  Changing security parameters involves changing parameters such as
password length, password expiration, permissions on files, registray
settings etc.  This all helps to make the box harder to break into thus
harden.
