George,
The problem that you have been experiencing has been reported and tracked
down by the engineering team.
Short Description:
The installation process fails to properly register some of Internet
Scanner's DLLs due to an optional optimization to the NT file system. This
results in the Policy Manager failing to properly load and the Scanner
exits. This problem can be fixed by uninstalling Scanner, changing the
registry entry controlling the NT file system naming convention, and
reinstall Internet Scanner. The exact steps are given below.
Long Description:
During the registration of the Internet Scanner DLLs, Scanner was trying to
retrieve the "short path" from the operating system. The "short path" is
the 8.3 path (as was necessary in NT 3.51, Win 3.1, or DOS machines due to
limitations on the file system). For a file named "thisisalongname.txt",
the corresponding short name would be thisis~1.txt.
The NT File System does not place the 8.3 restriction on file names, and
allows the user to disable 8.3 file names if desired. If the 8.3 file names
are disabled at Internet Scanner installation, Internet Scanner will be
unable to retrieve the "short paths", and will be unable to register the
DLLs. This is the problem that was evidencing itself on the affected boxes.
The disabling of 8.3 file names is controlled by a registry entry.
Initially, NT sets this registry entry to 0 (create 8.3 names). The
registry entry must be changed to 1 (don't create 8.3 names) in order to
disable 8.3 names. The changing of the registry may have occurred during
the installation of a third party software package, or may have been done
manually. Microsoft has stated that changing the registry entry to 1 will
help NT performance.
Solution:
This bug will be fixed in the next release of Internet Scanner.
A temporary workaround for this problem is described below:
1. Un-install Internet Scanner 6.1
2. Delete the directory where Internet Scanner 6.1 was installed
3. Open the registry using regedt32.exe
4. Navigate to the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
5. Change the value NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation to 0
6. Reboot the machine
7. Re-install Internet Scanner 6.1
It is critical that the Internet Scanner directory be deleted after
un-installation, because the directory must be re-created with the registry
in proper condition to work around the problem.
