I'm all for the diverse viewpoints. Here's my take on it: it's handy,
when communicating with up-the-ladder management, to be able sometimes
to point to an outside, objective source of information and of "on a
scale of 1 to 10" ratings, because as we all know, it is often more
effective to get a point across if you can show that (a) someone else
is making it too, and (b) that it's part of a disciplined and
concerted effort to place these vulnerabilities and states of siege in
some kind of rational context.

And especially since September 11, people are attuned to hearing
states of affairs summed up as "level 1," "level 2," and so on.

I myself find it useful to make points; for those readers who don't
need or want it, there are always a handful of ways to systematically
blow away unwanted mail that fits a pattern, whether it's to use
Procmail and a regex expression to match-and-delete, or a filter in a
POP/IMAP mailer like Eudora.

My three cents, anyhow....
