INTERNET RISK UPDATE for 05-28-2002
ISS X-Force Internet Threat Intelligence Center

www.iss.net - Click on the AlertCon logo for more information.

********************************************
ALERTCON 1
Projected: AlertCon 1
********************************************

ALERTCON 1 - We have returned to AlertCon 1, but please be cognizant
of the threat still posed by the MS SQL Worm.

Vulnerabilities:

Mandrake's imap has a reported buffer overflow that could allow a
malicious user to run code on the server with the uid and gid of the
email owner. A mitigating factor is that the attacker must
successfully authenticate to the imap service in order to exploit it.

Microsoft has released an advisory that addresses a flaw in the
authentication mechanism for the debugging facility that may allow
unauthorized access to the debugger. The debugger performs diagnostic
and analytic functions on applications as they are running on the
operating system.

VIRUSES/WORMS:

MS SQL Worm: We continue to observe a strong presence of this worm.
An analysis confirms that there are two separate worms with
distinctively different data packages actively propagating via port
1433. Once a system is compromised by using the default administrator
settings in SQL Server 7.0 and 2000, it adds a temporary account to
the local group administrator's list and then executes a Java Script
using a third party e-mail program which sends a password file and
then the victims network configuration settings to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

JS/NoClose is a JavaScript Trojan. When an affected website is
accessed the Trojan will minimize Internet Explorer and attempt to
access other websites without the user's express permission. These
sites either contain advertisements or pornographic material.

FACTOID: State courts authorized a dramatic increase in the use of
electronic surveillance last year, mostly to listen in on cell
phones, pagers and other wireless devices, according to a government
report released. In its annual Wiretap Report, the Administrative
Office of the U.S. Courts said state courts approved 1,005 wiretap
applications last year, up from 711 in the previous year.
