ALERTCON 1 - We have returned to AlertCon 1, but please be cognizant
of the threat still posed by the MS SQL Worm. 

Vulnerabilities: 


The PGP Public Key Server is a freely available and open source
public key server. Versions 0.9.2 and 0.9.4 are vulnerable to a
buffer overflow, which is caused by improper bounds checking of
remote search requests. By sending an overly long search string to a
vulnerable server, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer
resulting in the ability to execute arbitrary code on the system with
elevated privileges or to cause the server to crash.

Microsoft has released an advisory that addresses a flaw in the
authentication mechanism for the debugging facility that may allow
unauthorized access to the debugger. The debugger performs diagnostic
and analytic functions on applications as they are running on the
operating system.




VIRUSES/WORMS: 

MS SQL Worm: We continue to observe a strong presence of this worm.
An analysis confirms that there are two separate worms with
distinctively different data packages actively propagating via port
1433. Once a system is compromised by using the default administrator
settings in SQL Server 7.0 and 2000, it adds a temporary account to
the local group administrator's list and then executes a Java Script
using a third party e-mail program which sends a password file and
then the victims network configuration settings to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

VBS_PLEXIS.A  is a nondestructive virus that infects Microsoft Word
and Excel files. It uses Mail Application Programming Interface
(MAPI) functions to send email messages containing a copy of
PE_PLEXIS.A as attachment to all the recipients listed in the
infected user's address book.
