I wasn't referring to CatOS, I was refering to IOS, our networking team got
a bug in them to make any Switch that can take it, IOS and not CatOS. I know
Cat0S can do it because at one of our datacenters I am doing that.

  Actually, newer releases of CatOS (I believe at least 6.x and up; on
Cat4s, 5s,and 6s) can handle transmitting and receiving on the span port.
When building the span session you need to use the syntax:

set span <source> <destination> inpkts enable learning enable

This allows the port to function normally, and still monitor the source.
Again, standard disclaimer about over-subscribing the port exist.
