Robert, there is another platform that you might want to look into - the Nokia Security Platforms. They come in all sizes and flavors. All my network sensors are hosted on these platforms, and I must say Nokia is doing a darn good job with them. They have their own flavor of Free BSD Unix-like operating system, tailored especially for running ISS network sensors or CheckPoint Firewall-1 appliances. They are very reliable, and a perfect choice for a professional firewall/IDS environment. I am not working for Nokia, I have no interest whatsoever in having you purchasing their appliances. I am just acknowledging their existence. I had 2 years ago two sensors deployed on Solaris platforms, but I was not so happy about maintaining them in my infrastructure. You might want to investigate it a little bit - BTW, the smallest IP series appliance they have (Nokia IP130) is not so expensive, and their support (for hardware/IPSO/network sensors/firewall applications) is excellent.
