I have the same problem, and the message of failed update was:
Installation of update failed.Error: The XPU failed to install.

Waiting for install to complete for package
update\Site_Protector\DB_XPU_1_41_20040415.xpu
Starting install of update package
update\Site_Protector\DB_XPU_1_41_20040415.xpu
Unpacking update package update\Site_Protector\DB_XPU_1_41_20040415.xpu
Installing update ...
Update file update\Site_Protector\DB_XPU_1_41_20040415.xpu has already been
downloaded, no need to download.
So, what was done:
1. All Stephen Cooper's suggestions (see below).
2. Then I decided that something wrong with .xpu file. I deleted it from
\Application Server\XPU\update\Site_Protector, download again, try to
update DB, - the same result.
3. Restarting of MSSQLSERVER didn't bring desired results.
There is XPU installation log in attachment. May be it will be helpful for
someone. As for me, while reading that log I didn't understand what's the
matter.

i tried all you suggested but it did not work
i tried also what suggested in ID 1964 and 2254
but i still have the same problem
further now i can not see new events in the console windows

does anyone have some other idea?

Probably is corrupt, try this:
Stop your app server
Delete the download
Start your app server and try again
Oh...yes, you need to have the SQL Server Agent up as well, check that
it is.

i found nothing useful on the knowledgebase

i found an article in this forum but it is out of date and does not
suite to my case (i have already updated to sp3)
