The problem was the database collation. Look up for my post dated some month ago. For that reason, I suggest you should use Windows US English locales at SP database host. Although the Site Protector didn't fail after the unsuccessful core update (it resumed at Service Pack level 4), I strongly suggest that you use Ghost to backup your system and database before you try to upgrade. You may also detach Event Collector temporarily from your sensors until you are sure that the update works. This way, if you'll have to restore the system, no events will be lost (presumming that your sensors have cache setting big enough for update time/traffic). I had to do clean install od SP2sp5.
