[~philip], the questions are those I needed to research. Your pointers and
[~tarmstrong]'s showed that we do have native implementations, but there is an
award cost to using them: extra levels of argument passing, and also the need
to evaluate both the "then" and "else" expressions even though we'll always
discard one of them.
Please see the revised version of my prior note. The bottom suggests a path
forward. Thanks much for the pointer to the test code; that will be critical
here.
