The large number of task statuses were caused by Helix bug. Dimuthu said:

db and upgrade the helix version to 0.8.2 -> 0.9.7 in dev to initiate the

After the clean up I'm seeing better performance (not timing out any longer),
but it is still slow so I'll keep this issue open to investigate if there is
anything we still need to do at the database level to fix the performance.
