The sample query given on the page "select 1;" takes 10s for me. I know for a fact that hive is faster than this. This is the limitation with the current implementation and Ambari framework. We are limited to polling for results as opposed to the server push model and hence there is the time lag between the submission of the query and the result coming to the page. The polling interval is currently fixed to 10s and we had a discussion internally in which we decided to reduce the polling interval to 2-3 secs so that the queries as simple as this one is displayed almost in no time.
