 Review comment:
   It seems naming conversion wise, all methods that handles allocates new 
buffers are called "xxxSafe". 
   
   Since we have 
   
   ```
   public void safeSafe(int index, ...)
   ```
   
   Does
   ```
   public void setValiditySafe(int index, boolean valid)
   ```
   
   Makes more sense for this function?
